I'm more of the offensive Trainer. I'd suggest Sceptile because he only has 1 type. If you chose Venusaur, you'd be in trouble with not only Grass's weaknesses, but Poison weaknesses too! Also, give Sceptile some EV training in the ATK Department. He's better suited for physical attacks because of Sword Dance and a bigger physical movepool.Here's a Move Set I suggest, but your going to have to see move tutors for some Moves.
Leaf Blade
Rock Slide(So you're not totally walled by Salamence)
Earthquake(For Fire types and Steel types)
Sword Dance(Since you wanted it anyway)
Oh, and also, try leveling up it's DEF and SP.DEF if you can(Use Iron for example)
This is my opinion though....
