I can remember in high school a lot of those cartoon program blocks already transferring to their respected company owned channels ex. viacom - nickelodean, fox = fox family, WB = cartoon network. Probably the biggest surprise was it lasting till 2014 before all of it went over to the cable side.
As for me I can fondly remember waking up super early like 7 am, making a giant bowl of lucky charms cereal, going down to the basement and watching alot of super hero related shows when I was a kid. Some of my favorites were The Batman the Animated series, Spiderman the animated series, and x-men. I think after the wb block ended they played an hours worth of anime like the original Dragonball series and Sailor Moon.
Even when I was a kid in the 90's I never watched Saturday MORNING Cartoons, I hated the morning and wasn't trying to get up early on a day off from school. I actually thought for basically the most part, aside from WB (or the CW now), Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, I thought Sat Morn cartoons were extinct in the 80's.
Besides these kids now may not care anyway, they've got other ways to find cartoons any time anywhere.
Recess, Pokemon, Spongebob, Inspector Gadget, a lot of the other good Disney cartoons before the channel went corrupt. I am really quite sad about it. Children are being taught crap starting at younger ages.
Saturday mornings were a HUGE thing for me as a kid. I fondly remember shoving Cap'n Crunch down my throat before sitting down to watch Looney Tunes, Garfield and Friends, Batman, Superman, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Doug, Recess, Pepper Ann, and a lot more. To think that today's kids will never know that feeling makes me very sad.
RIP, Saturday mornings. May your memory never die.
My parents never paid attention to me as a kid, so most of the time I was sat in front of the TV to watch cartoons or play PlayStation. My favorite cartoons were Dexter's Laboratory, Doug, Cat Dog, Spongebob, Rocko's Modern Life, Rocket Power, Cow & Chicken, Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls, and Hey Arnold. I also remember watching Dragon Ball Z and Samurai Jack.
Anybody remember Slime Time Live? My sister and I watched that like every week.
Channel 5 was the spot for me.
I would always watch the KidsWB every Saturday morning it was the greatest.
Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Jackie Chan Adventures, Xiaolin Showdown, Cardcaptors, Mucha Lucha, good Johnny Test, Static Shock, What's New Scooby Doo, all of those were gold to me.
For us it was like that channel that played the TMNT cartoon which was quite good, Kirby, Sonic X, etc. and then the old Family Channel cartoons like The Weekenders, Filmore, and YTV which was stuff like Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents. It's sad to see none of this stuff on anymore with the exception of Spongebob. I think it's outlived everything else. Even Fairly Odd Parents stopped running a year or two ago (I think).
I was too young to remember that show, but it's a trend with these Japanese-animated 80's shows that have awesome animation at the opening but...kinda crappy in the show itself.
Yeah... that show had a sub-par animation quality. It's just like you said, awesome opening to get you pumped and mediocre animation. Other shows that were guilty of this were Thunder Cats and the Mega Man cartoon.
I don't have cable and we don't watch much TV. My kids like to play Lego's in the mornings. I grew up with TV, but it's just another unnecessarily high-cost bill to pay, so I opted out. We have a Roku for occasional TV time and my son does like Wild Kratts.
Ahhhhh~ I remember watching cartoons sooo much when I was younger....
I'm not really sad about the decline though, things change and where people go for their entertainment changes too. I'm sure when cartoons first started to become a regular thing there were a lot of people who were really sad about the decline in the book series production they enjoyed when they were younger.
I just take it as a sign that media is evolving
One Saturday Morning!
It ended for me a while ago. I used to watch Kids WB and One Saturday Morning all the time though. I liked Pepper Ann and Pinky and the Brain. Pokemon was my favourite, and then I watched the Winx Club every Saturday morning and that was my new favourite. I actually remember when the Winx Club first aired on 4Kids TV/Kids WB.
Happy memories. I went online and played the Winx Makeover games, too. Ah, lol, what a dork.
My family didn't have cable for a really long time, so I pretty watched nothing but local network cartoons. I was also born in 1990, so I got to experience all the old shows from the 80s and the newer shows from the early 2000s and up, which was pretty awesome. I grew up with Ren&Stimpy, TMNT (1980s version), Beast Wars, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Batman: The Animated Series, X-Men: The Animated Series, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, X-Men: Evolution, Static Shock, Batman Beyond, Digimon (SO much Digimon), Pokemon, Carmen Sandiego, Captain Planet, Spider-Man, Looney Tunes, The Flintstones, My Little Pony, Carebears, and The Jetsons.
Really sad to hear. I loved watching Saturday morning cartoons in my room.
Though as I got older, the quality of shows started to decline. It's because of this that I stopped getting up so early on the weekends.
I loved one saturday morning on ABC, kids wb, and Fox Box before it turned into 4kids. Though it did have it's moments. And the Discovery Kids block on NBC was decent though short lived as it was.
Well, if anything it was one heck of ride while it lasted.
