To get regular saplings you could just bury bags of money instead, I think it works with 1k.

Do I need a golden shovel to do that or will it work with any? And will it still go pink in April?

Ah yes you may need a golden shovel..forgot about that. I just have one regular sapling at my store...but if you bury fruits and harvest until they stop giving fruits, those trees also turn pink in April.
