When I first started playing NL and started hitting the money rocks every day I was getting all 8 hits and all the money available. A few months back (before I started my 2nd town)while I was hitting a money rock I coughed and missed the 8th hit. I didn't think much of it but ever since then I haven't been able to get my rhythm back and get all 8 hits and all the available money. Now I have 2 towns and am having problems hitting both money rocks 8 times. I know there's a trick of digging holes to stop yourself from bouncing back but some of the rocks are in places where it's hard to dig holes. Are there any other tricks or suggestions that might help me get back to getting that 8th hit? Thank you!

It is incredibly hard to describe the exact rhythm, but I definitely know what you're talking about. I tend to button mash when I hit the money rock, but the rhythm can be hard to nail if you start off wrong. I'd say that if your character makes a full stop of motion while hitting the rock, take a millisecond to stop and reset your mash rhythm and hopefully you'll continue with the quicker hits. Also make sure you're always using a shovel and not an axe, I find the axe is slower.
For some of my rocks digging the hole can't be an option. In my second town I have one rock that's right in front of the Town Plaza so I can't dig there and another rock is right in front of the Train Station so I can't dig there. I was hoping there were other ways to help.

Hmm.... I don't button mash when I'm hitting the rock but I don't know if I ever did. Do you hold the circle pad towards the rock so you automatically move forward if you get hit? I didn't even know we could use the ax! I started off with the shovel and didn't try any of the other tools. lol!
I'm going to try digging holes for the rocks I can but I wish I could find something to help with the other rocks. Thank you for your help!

I'm rarely able to hit it eight times before it times out, as others have mentioned, holes and shovels help, I hold the circlepad forward too. I also seem to have better luck if I stand behind it, (from our angle) then other angles.
I know there's always a possibility of not getting the 8th bag but to have not gotten it at least once in months is crazy. I've feng shui-ed the heck out of my house so I should have good wealth luck which means I should have gotten that 8th bag at a few times since I lost my rhythm. I tried digging holes today & mashing the button but didn't get the 8th bag in either town.
I always stand behind the rock too. I never even thought to stand anywhere else. lol!
I planted a bush-tree-bush combo two spaces from all the rocks where this was possible, so if you stand in front of the tree it should be possible without needing to dig any holes;

I have some rocks that are either too close to my town hall/plaza/train station for me to plant anything behind and some rocks are right in front of paths. I wasn't paying enough attention to rock placement when I picked my maps. lol!
Woo hoo! I finally got the 8th bag today! It was a combination of digging holes, pushing forward on the circle pad & button mashing that worked. Now that months long streak is broken I'm happy. Even if I don't get the 8th bag every time from now on at least I got it again today.
Just no. There is a grid space in this game, there will always be room. Everything counts as a hole, if there is a tree where the second hole goes, that's 2 holes. If there is a building, that's 2 holes.
There are 8 spaces around the rock (not counting river ones) Unless you cheated your town, there is ALWAYS a way to make it work.

Um, yes. Totally yes. I have a rock that's near to my Town Hall in my main town. The pavement of the town hall blocks me from digging a hole behind me on the right. Do you know of a way to dig through that pavement because any time I try I bounce off of it? Here's a diagram to help...

There are 4 sides to a rock, with 2 possibilities per side. There should be 8 different combos.. 12 if corners work.

Red is a spot you can stand.
Yellow is a space for the holes.
Use this diagram to find 2 open holes... Or 1 if there is a tree or building next to it.

I like to stand behind the rock. It's what feels most natural to me. I posted yesterday that by following a combination of the advice from others in this thread that I was able to get the 8th bag again and was very happy about it. Thank you for your suggestions.
