Where I'm from, which is in the states, we do often say "they" if unsure of the person's gender. I didn't know it wasn't used that way in other places.

You can just use 'they' if you're unsure of their gender, too. That's what I did.

I've never heard of it being used that way online or irl :/

For me, an animal is not an it. My cat is a she, she is part of my family and I love her :3 I would be sad if she were referred to as an "it" because she's like my sister and my human sister is not an it either.
But different people in different parts of the world speak different, and people have their opinions! *shrug*

I have a dog and I love him to bits but wouldn't really care if someone called him an it.... tbh I wouldn't really care if someone called me an it... My reaction would be like ok you need to get your eyes checked.... meh
