Repeating subtypes

So far most villagers whose personalities I've repeated have been of different subtypes, so I'm curious. Do villagers of the same subtype feel too similar? Or do they feel different enough, especially if their hobbies are different? I'm trying to decide on a new villager but don't want to pick someone who'd end up being boring. Thanks.

In my (albeit limited) experience, I don't feel that they're too similar. Maybe it's because I've been encountering lots of different dialogue, but I don't think they're too similar. As you say, they feel different when their hobbies are different. In my opinion, when deciding a new villager you should go with someone who you like or fits the theme of your town.

IMO I think that, even with the same subtype, they can still feel different enough if they have different hobbies and if you happen to get different enough dialogue from them (it will repeat to some degree, but it's not too bad!)
Even their design/appearance can contribute to a different "feel", so your imagination can work with it and fill in the blanks XD

As others have said, there are other factors that also contribute, so I don’t think it’s the one deciding element.

However, I actually have noticed that villagers with the same subtype feel more similar to me. I used to have two jocks of different subtypes (Antonio and Boots) and they actually did feel like they were buddies with different approaches—Antonio was the serious jock who bench pressed everyday and Boots talked a big talk but mostly wanted to scream “sports!” and run in circles. Having two Normals or Lazies of the same subtype, by contrast, has always felt a lot more like two entities with the same insides walking around.

I usually look for islanders that are crazy colourful looking most of the time those islanders are lazy and jockey types and sometimes they can be similar to the others. The only real difference between them is the hobbies and tasks they are into that make them different.

Sometimes they do feel very similar, like I’ll chat with one and then go up to the other and find the same dialogue. But this only happens once in a while. I’ve had conversations with one of them that I haven’t had at all with the other. That’s not to say that I won’t eventually see the same convo from the other, but at least, like I said, they don’t often happen at the same time, for me at least. In this case I am talking about Bunnie & Gabi, who are of the same subtype and have the same hobby. I’d also like to note that I have Kiki & Maple, who are also same subtype and same hobby and they actually seem more similar than the peppies
