If you've done everything correctly but he still hasn't woken up all I can suggest is that you wait

you should have 100 pieces of furniture and 50 pieces of clothing cataloged. you're probably missing that.

If your gate is open he wont be awake, not sure if that's what's happening, but I open my gate everyday to shake my trees and often forget.

No, that's not right. I just looked it up. I knew about the bells/days, but I didn't realize you also had to have clothes and furniture. These are the requirements:

1. 100,000 Bells worth of items have been sold to Reese.
2. 50 pieces of furniture have been cataloged (found at the Nookling Stores).
3. 10 pieces of clothing cataloged (from the Able Sisters).
4. The player has played for seven days.
