Redecorating a villager's house?

I've read a few posts on people trying to fix the houses of villagers that they think have a terrible decoration. Maybe I'm missing something obvious here but how would you do that? Just send them the furniture you want them to have?

EDIT: Also, how do I remove an ugly item from their home? My best villager has randomly acquired a really ugly shirt and is displaying it in his house, it matches absolutely nothing and just looks bad. :|

You wait until they invite you over and you talk to them until they ask if you want anything. You pick the shirt and buy it from them.

My villagers never invite me over, though, is there something I should do to trigger that or do I just keep talking to them and wait?

They just sometimes randomly invite you over during conversations, or when they ping you. It's the best way to get rid of their gross furniture imo. You can also send then items in the mail, but there's no guarantee they'll put them in good spots lol

You just have to talk to them a lot and become close friends with them. Use your megaphone to say their names when they are on screen (but far enough away from you that you don't hurt their ears) and see if they wave/bow, or if they look around in confusion. If they wave/bow, they are good friends with you.

I generally get one invitation to go to someone's house and one request to come to my house every day, BUT I think you have to play fairly early in the day for that. If I'm playing after 8pm (I don't know what the actual hour is, but later in the day), they don't make either request.

lol yeah I've noticed that last bit just now... I sent him a shirt to wear and he's displaying that one too. This would be really funny except the other shirt is so ugly and I'm pretty sure it's one I re-gifted to an annoying villager before.
