RE: "Help! My Wife Won't Stop Playing Animal Crossing."

Ok I was going to post this in the thread itself but after 5 minutes of constant debating with myself, I decided I would create a new thread and not steal that one;

so, if you haven't read the thread yet, it can be read here

Anyway, it's about a wife who is addicted to ACNL and is ignoring her husband.
I made a post about my friend mom who took 3 days off work to play bejewled.
And then I remembered I was in class on Friday and we were talking about our major personal interest project works (which is pretty much a big research task on stuff) and someone was talking about video games, and how people can be addicted to video games and not sleep etc - mentioned Assassins Creed and not getting a good sleep for the past 3 days 'cause he's too into playing

And then this thread came up and I thought, why not add to it (yes I know this would be a great blog post but I want responses and to me the blog tree is dead)
Anyway, what I am trying to get at is I don't understand how people can be so addicted they take days off work/don't sleep/ignore their husbands - i mean, I'm on lappy from pretty much when I wake up, to when I finally decide to go to sleep, and I generally get a good 9 hours sleep. I also go on walks, do work, eat, talk to people and such.

So I am just getting at how are people so addicted that they don't do these essential activities. Yes. I enjoy being on my laptop and playing video games, but I can see the importance of getting out of the house and talking to people, eating and sleeping. I just don't see how one person can be totally addicted to a game and lose all interest in life

So pretty much I made this thread to find out;
i) have you (or someone you know) ever been addicted to a video game
ii) why did you (or them) feel so attached to the video game that you couldn't stop playing
iii) what effects did it have on you

and if you want to add anything else please feel free. I'm just really curious as to how people can get addicted to this.

I have been addicted to Prof. Layton and the Diabolical Box. I was playing it so much because it took averagely 8-9 hours to beat, and my goal was to beat it in less than 4 days. It didn't have much effects, but I just whipped my old DS lite out right after I did homework.

To add to this, I was on a Pokemon forum, and they were talking about BW2 and this guy posted he beat the game (as in elite 4) in 62 hours.. Like seriously..

I don't get how people can be so addicted

If you really let it, you can get addicted to almost anything.

I don't think I've ever been addicted to a video game or really know anyone personally who has been.
an addiction would be habit forming though, and come with some sort of negative withdrawal effects if they weren't to have it for a period of time.

In this case with the lady playing AC, I think it's still just excitement. With a game like AC, you can stay excited for longer because there isn't any way to do everything in just one sitting, even if it's for an entire day.

On the same subject, I do have a pretty bad caffeine addiction which clashes badly with my medication.

Most of the time, people just want an escape from reality and in video games, the world is always better. So it's a natural escape method.

My opinion is the same as Bacon Boy's. They're probably just trying to drown out the doldrums of life in something more exciting to them.

I did this all the time when I was a child. I'd pretend to be sick to stay home and I would either play video games all day or I would lose myself in television or something of that sort.

I wouldn't say I've ever been addicted, but there have been times when I've played video games a lot. When I'm on an Animal Crossing swing, I might play for an hour or more a day. I've played over 350 hours of TF2 in less than a year, but I wouldn't call either addictions. I enjoy the games and play them, but they don't take up all my time and remove me from reality. I put school and more important thing first. (Usually)

This sort of thing is becomming more and more common and also more sick.

I've heard stories of parents abandoning children/babies to starve to death over video games, even neglecting themselves to death over a game. I admit, I get PRETTY absorbed by a game, but I can have my attention broken by my body's needs and hell. I often get so bored I turn off and do something else.

Personally. I think there's no real solution to this. It's not a video games fault for ****, it's that person being so mornoic they don't think about anything BUT the game and therefore neglect the outside world. My mom jokes about how I get so absorbed I "wouldn't hear the house burning down" but **** man.. I'd get pissed off if I was this addicted.

I use to play Runescape 10 hours a day. Still playing the game and it's been over 5 years since I started.

I don't think you could compare MMORPGs to video games through :P
