Will a villager from a friend's void move in even if you never visit their town or they never come to yours? Also, does writing letters to your friend cause a void villager to move in? And, can void villagers be prevented from moving in by turning off your internet?
Pretty sure either one of you has to visit the others town, so just by being near them won't give you a void villager. Writing letters does not make it possible to end up with a void villager, and turning off the internet does not affect whether you get a void villager or not. I'm pretty sure you have to visit their town or vice versa and if you have an open spot there is a chance they will move in. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure this is how it works.
I know that it was the case in older games that villagers could move in from a friend's void by being in contact with that, but I don't think that was kept (don't ever remember it happening in NL), so I don't think it will be the case in NH.
As far as I am aware, once a villager has their name on an open plot, you're gonna get that villager, end of. Nothing do be done.
