I’m getting a new switch, and ideally would like to have my current (main) island on it. I have the island backup enabled, but am unsure of how this process may go. Nintendo seems to want your old switch to either be broken or lost in order for them to restore your save on a new system. If I simply tell them I’ve lost my current switch what will happen? Does the save file just get deleted from it? That would be fine; I’m not trying to have the same island on two switches, I just want my save transferred to the new one.

Also I have a second character on my current island, and that character does have a Nintendo account, but not switch online. If I am able to have my save transferred to the new switch from my main island rep account, what will happen to the second character? Will she just be deleted? Will she e transferred as well and I’ll be able to continue to access her as I currently am?

Pretty sure if the second account doesn't have the NSO sub, they'd just be deleted. And apparently other people have said the person you talked to/online chatted the system doesn't need to be broken/lost/whatever...and others have said the person they talked to flat out raised to help them. So...luck of the draw, I guess? Or just try until you get someone who will unlock the save transfer for you.

And THEN I've read from some people that the OG system will be blocked from accessing online play, or something. I don't know how much I believe that one.

But either way, I'd say just contact Nintendo and see what they say.

Hm, didn’t even think of that. I certainly don’t want Nintendo essentially bricking a perfectly good switch by blocking it from online play. I guess I’ll just have to ask if the save can be transferred and see what happens, since it would look suspicious if I’m concerned about the original switch still having access to online play if I’m claiming I lost it. Sigh. I wish this wasn’t such a hassle and we could just have normal backups like with every other game. I feel like I’m conspiring to commit a crime just because I want access to my own save data on a new system.

Yeah, I didn't try to transfer my island save when I got a new Switch...so I'm basing everything on what I've read from others online. I'd honestly just reach out to Nintendo and see what they say. If they tell you they won't transfer, or that the other system will be useless for online play...obviously don't do it if they tell you the other Switch will be unusable.

It basically seemed like, to me, it really depends on who you talk to.
