How does villager trading work? I'm new to this and I really want Mitzi since I had her in the Gamecube Animal Crossing and she was my absolute favorite!

well if you have 9 villagers or less you can exchange fc with someone who is selling/ giving away the villager you want.. you go to their town and talk to the villager thats in boxes and the next day s/he should be in your town

You have a few possibilities:
1. To NOT make a buying thread to notify others that you are currently looking for a specific villager. cuz apparently thats not allowed xP
2. Keep a eye out for the Cycling threads. Those are where people are specifically flushing out villagers to give people the opportunity to get villagers they want. However, you'll need to be fast and always watching it just in case your villager moves into someone's cycle town. Its up to the cycler's digression on how to giveaway the villager. Whether it's FFA (free for all) or dreamy proof. **what is dreamy proof? look at my signature**
3. Giveaways. Some cyclers will post more desirable villagers on a separate thread, and would be given out as FFA or Dreamy Proof.
4. Auctions. Time to ahead out all your hard earn bells. Its can get pretty intensive especially for Tier 1 villagers. I've seen some go for 30Million bells. For most parts villagers usually go for 2-7Mil.

Don't make a buying/looking thread. Those are not allowed. If you want others to know you are looking there is an official looking for thread. You can also put it in your signature as well.
You can make a trading thread if you wish to trade any of your current villagers for Mitzi.
