So Poncho moved out 2 days ago & all day yesterday I was using nook mile tickets to try to find a new resident that I liked, but then I logged on this morning & the spot was sold?! To a smug deer named Lopez /: deff not looking forward to having another smug villager.. & really confused as to why that spot sold without me even meeting this character or approving it? If you could help that would be great! (& possibly tell me how to get rid of him if I could) ugh

Have you done anything online? This includes trading, visiting other islands, or having visitors. You can pick up a villager from their void and they'll take the empty plot.
Damnit yes I have ): I’ve been visiting other islands & having a lot of people come to mine the past few days (ever since I found this forum haha it’s kind of addicting) but I don’t remember talking to a Lopez? If he was packed up on someone’s island that I visited then he automatically comes to mine?

If they were a resident on the island and moved out without someone adopting them, the villager goes to what's called the "void" where they can be picked up by a resident with an open plot. So you don't have to speak to them or even know they were in the village. If that's the case, he'll tell you tomorrow when he moves in what town he came from. If not, it might have just been an autofill, but usually the game chooses a personality you don't have to fill it with.
Doesn't matter if you've visited other people's islands or not.
If you have an empty plot, you have 1 to 2 days to fill it. For your case, it seems like the plot was empty for 1 full day before the game moved someone in for you automatically.
I think this is partly why so many people island hop hundreds of tickets at once to find their villager. It's a tedious process but you're kind of under a time limit before the game fills the plot for you.

yeah I think I went to at least like 15 islands yesterday & didn’t love any of the villagers ): I’m specifically looking for a duck or a snooty villager bc I don’t have either but I didn’t run into any when I was island hopping!! SO frustrating. Now I have to wait until another villager moves out ugh
