On the daily, I was writing "How are you doing?" in a letter to each villager, sending them a gift of a (perfect) orange or pear. Not only are they giving them/selling them back to me, but at this point, they aren't writing back! Could someone help me find a solution to these problems?

Honestly, I think it's completely random if they write back. And to be even more honest, villagers are REALLY good at re-gifting things you send them.

I once sent Wolfgang something for his house. Next day, he asked to give something to Jacques. Jacques opens the gift, and it's the same item I sent Wolfgang the previous day. Then Jacques didn't even PUT it in his house!

Try writing longer letters, I read somewhere recently that there is apparently a system if you write well with good punctuation and capitalization then the letters are better? I think they are rated better so maybe what you are writing is too short for a response or they have a lower rating? If I really but it's something to consider!

One of the FAQs suggested writing

Thanks,
friend.

in letters (with proper punctuation and spelling!) so that's what I've been doing. While I do tend to get (non-perfect) fruit back as gifts, I usually get letters from 6+ villagers in response to the "Thanks, friend." Just to be clear, hit enter after the comma so it breaks across two lines.

I think there are certain rules to writing letters. I believe you have to write at least 4 lines on the paper, and you have to include proper punctuation etc... Try writing more that "How are you doing?". Best thing is to just ramble, villagers love long letters!! Good luck

Basically this.

Also, I think if you write to them too often, they have less of a chance of replying. I think even when I've written letters that are probably good, according to the system, but wrote everyone more than once a day, then they didn't reply to the second letter, and it also didn't seem to work as well when I tried writing them daily, if I remember correctly.

I've also heard including one of the symbols (star, heart, etc.) can help.

I'd always just write "You're awesome!" and then attach stationary hoping for rare stationary in return.
I'd get mostly presents from them.
Apparently, what you say and give affects what you get return, not sure of the specifics.

Saying "present" is supposed to get you a present.
Sending fruit has a high probability of getting fruit.

Not sure if sending furniture vs shirts makes a difference, but probably? I tend to send furniture and get furniture, wallpaper, and flooring back.

I think there are ?rules? to letter writing as well;;.. But it?s really just having good spelling, grammar, punctuation and having no words ?cut? between one line and the next. Villagers also love long letters! I always fill each line, but since someone said 4 lines should be enough, that?s great too! I also read somewhere that villagers prefer furniture over fruit/wallpaper/carpet/shirts, but somewhere else I read that the length of your letter affects what type of gift you get back, so I?m not sure which one is true.;; But either is probably why you keep getting your perfect fruit gifts back...;; Villagers also recognise (and like as well I think) certain ?keywords? such as names, and the words: ?friend?, ?present?, ?like?, and ?thanks?.

Good luck! ;7;

The update removed the rare stationary. I have some and it was in the catalog before the update. It's gone from the catalog now.

Got most of the rare stationary from players that never wrote to the villagers. Think it was a way to get the player to write back.

I just made a HUGE realization. There is a level of friendship with villagers where they will start to want to become your pen-pal. Maybe if we befriend villagers up to that point, they will want to write back after that.
