Question on villager clothing/hats

Wondering if there is a certain criteria to make villagers wear hats/clothing? I'm able to let my villager try on all clothing/hats on harvs island yet when I tried to get kiki to wear a mage hat, she displays it on the floor of her house instead zzz
is there a guranteed way to make villagers wear the clothing/hats you give them?

im not 100% sure but i think it depends on the villager's personal style because certain clothes are worth more friendship points based on "preferred style" so they prob choose what to wear based on that as well (again I am not 100% sure someone please correct me if I am wrong)

You can lookup a villager and see what styles they like, you need to click on the villager gifts tool.

There's a weird deal with villager hats, actually, where they will display it on their floors most of the time... BUT they do occasionally where them. From my experience, at least. But, when they're not wearing them, they will display them. IDK if there's any requirement to guarantee they'll wear them, but the only ones I've gifted were picked from this link and were "perfect" gifts in terms of my villagers' preferences.

For instance, I have Ursala one of the bandannas you can buy from the Nook Mile Stop thing-y (the yellow one) and she wears it sometimes, I got a pic of her wearing it to the beach yesterday.

But honestly I gave Diana a bunch of clothes that don't match her style or color and she still wears them because I think our friendship is high enough, but don't quote me on that

From my experience, I don't think I've ever given any villager something they utterly refused to wear. The hat-on-floor thing is just a weird... I don't know if it's a glitch or what, but just a weird thing that seems to happen with ALL hats- even if they love them and wear them sometimes.

Yes, It happened with Cyd, Diana and Chops.
I got Cyd to put his hat in his closet/wardrobe after I gave him a red electric guitar to match his drums. I gave Diana a big white bow that she then replaced with a blue hair pin that I then got her to replace with a white rattan closet/wardrobe. Chops... well... I had issues with him.... I TT'd back and forth during the time I gave him an item to replace one of his hats causing the duplication glitch.... I'm convinced TTing during a time you gift them something causes the glitch, because he's the only one that has that happen to him.

I've given Felicity a Hibiscus pin early on, she immediately displayed it in one of her "free" spots in her home and never wore it after the first time. Once I started replacing the clothing on the "free" spots, she finally wears the hair pin occasionally. You might want to fill in the 1x1 spaces in their home before gifting them any kind of headwear.

I don't know the techie stuff behind it, but I think they would be more likely to wear hats and accessories if they like the style. I make sure that it is off the floor of their house so I can assume it is in their inventory. Sherb wore his children's day crown the other day, so they will wear them eventually.
