Question about villagers moving in.

So yeah, Mathilda was in boxes yesterday and said she was leaving. She is my first villager to leave my town.
I'm doing the Villager Reset Trick to make sure no one puts their house on something important. However, I started my game up today, and started a new character, there was no one moving in.

My question is how long does it take for a new villager to move in after one has just left?
Also, if someone were to move in, could their plot happen at any time of the day? or is someone moving in decided at the beginning of a new day?

Sometimes it can take 1 day, sometimes it can take weeks for someone new to move in. If you just check with a new character once a day before playing normally you're fine. New villagers only move in at the start of any given day (6am)

From my experience it's around 5 days, but as Tuc said, it's best to just check everyday, you never know.

If you're waiting on a random villager, it can take up to seven days.

If you invite a villager from another town, they plot their home after 6AM the next day.

Campers take two days, iirc.
