I delivered a gift from Astrid to Eugene, and it contained a twinkle tank that he promptly put on. I wanted him to stay in his pleather vest, so I said it looked "OK". He felt sad, changed to his default shirt, and gave the tank to me as a gift.

Does telling villagers neutral/negative things like this affect their friendship?

I have heard that it is the delivery that is important and not what you say afterward. But I still played for a year before I said anything other than looking great! Seriously, though, I don't think the game would make you chose between getting an item and gaining friendship - it just doesn't seem to be that sort of game, you know? I've also recently tried telling them their house is so-so after a year of always saying their houses were great. They actually don't even seem to mind that.

I see that Savannah in your sig, btw. Isn't she great? <3

Was there three options? You're meant to pick the top/best option for them to wear the shirt. The third/worst and second option (In your case, ok, which they found you thought it was "meh", "okish", "average", from your responce) they will not wear it.

I think a good friendship is also needed for them to wear the shirt. I'm not sure.

Really? When I said a shirt looked bad on Mint, she said I was jealous and she stayed in the shirt. I said it looked ok on Maple and she stayed in it, saying that she would get used to it.

I hate some of these mechanics though :/

Oh?! I guess it works depending on what personality then. o.o
I haven't played much ACNL in awhile lol. My bad.

It probably does depend on the personality. Someone gave a green blazer to Ankha the other day, and I didn't like how it looked on her. I choose the third option, but she said she was gonna wear it anyway.

I assume it does lower the friendship since they don't always change back to their old clothes if you tell them it looks bad. Otherwise, I don't know what the purpose is. I think the delivery itself only affects friendship with the villager who asked you to deliver it but I'm not sure.

When I don't want a villager to change, when someone asks me to deliver something to them I save my game and then check what the item is. If I want to go through with the delivery, I reload my game. If I don't (if it's an ugly shirt or something) I just let the time frame expire. That affects friendship levels but I've never noticed a big chance so it's probably something you can make up for by just talking to them a few times.
