I'm finally getting this game soon but I've got questions.

I saw that the first villagers that move into your island have very, very basic houses with a decoration that is different from their regular one. How easy is it to redecorate it later? Does this happen if you invite someone else's villagers as your first ones? I don't want my villagers to deal with dirt floors forever lol.

Is this the case with starting villager houses too or just the first ones to move in after you start?

Thanks

Anyone that moves after your first camper will have their normal interior. I don’t know if you can adopt from other players villagers 3-5 because I didn’t try to. My original jock is permanent resident and I’ve seen his interior but don’t like it. It is difficult to get them to replace what you want replaced. I’ve had to gift the same things several times and I’m still not satisfied

It's not really possible to redecorate their starter houses completely, and anyway the wallpaper and flooring is permanent. It's rather unfortunate, I really don't know why they did it like that. There should be a option to get their actual house design once the tutorial is over.

What do you mean about the villagers after the first camper? I thought this happened to the first 3-5 villagers!

Does your original jock have the normal interior? I'm trying to decide if I should reset for the starters I want or if it's not worth it. :(

I believe the way to fix the villagers starting houses is to get them to move out, have a friend of yours take them to their island to hold them for you. Then have a friend get them to move and in boxes, then you retake them to your island. Quite sure that fixes their houses from the starters to their actual house. It sounds like a pain and it kind of is, but if you both TT it's easy to setup. Without TT'ing though, it's quite difficult to replace the starting houses in a timely matter.

Also just as an FYI in case you don't know, the first 2 starters you get will always be a Jock and an Uchi villager. Super useful to know if you wanted to reset your island for starting villagers, or Resident Services placement or something like that.

Wow, that sucks. Do you know if this happens if you invite existing villagers (from Amiibo cards or someone's villager) makes this happen too? I think I'll just pick random starting villagers and get the ones I want only after that.

That sounds really complicated. :| By the way, do you know of any good TT guides for ACNH? I tried to look it up but the stuff about autosaving is throwing me off.

I knew about the Jock and the Uchi and I was planning on resetting for them but now... I'm not sure it's worth it. I'm definitely going to reset for a nice map though :p

Your 6th villager is your forced camper (usually a smug) and first to have a normal interior. My jock has a generic interior and I don’t want his normal interior. If you really don’t want plain looking interiors I would suggest having someone foster them, as someone else described, to get their normal interior. You can also use Amiibo cards but they will not remember you if it’s not the exact version of them you started with. My starting sisterly moved back recently from my best friend’s island and has her normal interior. Villagers 3-5 are from what I’ve seen always normal, peppy and lazy personalities.

Honestly the guide that is used is slightly outdated, but here's how I move out villagers quickly. I've moved out over 100 during my playthrough while trading and photo hunting them.

Step 1 / Day 1: Talk to a few villagers. Save your game and close ACNH
Step 2: TT 1 month forward and make sure the date doesn't end up on a Saturday. (Villagers can't request to move out when KK slider is around).
Step 3: Look around your island for a villager with the thought bubble over their head. If it's not the villager you want to move out, save and close the game, then +1 day.
Step 4: Look for a thought bubble on that day for a villager. If you find one and it's not the villager you want, TT backwards to the previous day that had the thought bubble. If you don't see a thought bubble, still TT backwards to the previous day with the thought bubble, until you find the villager you want to move out.

Cliff notes: TT a month to maximize move out desires. Find a day that has a villager wanting to move out and go between that day, and the following day while time traveling until you find your desired villager to move out. Saturdays (or special Fridays with KK around) can't have a villager move out.

You can’t adopt villagers 3-5 from other people (your starter normal, peppy, and lazy). I had someone try when the game was still new and the villager refused to move onto their island despite them having an open plot. Your only option is to find them on mystery islands or accept the random move-ins from Tom Nook. You don’t unlock the ability to scan amiibo villagers until after your forced smug camper (6th villager) moves in.

The first half of your villagers will have basic interiors no matter what because i dont think you can adopt from someone esle until after you get the camper. To fix this you can have your villagers move to someone else's island and then adopt them back. That will make them have their true interior. You better look at how their real houses look first, sometimes the basic ones can look better, imo.

Thank you so much, this is great! It sounds less risky than TTing in ACNL, which is nice.

What I meant is if after my two starting villagers, they can have normal interiors if I invite them from someone's island? Or will they have the plain interior? I don't really mind not having the same versions of my starting villagers -- in fact, if I need to wait I'll probably make sure I get starting villagers I don't want so I can move everyone else in ASAP.

Yeah, definitely less risky than TT'ing in ACNL. The great thing about ACNH is that you have to confirm if a villager moves out, instead of it being a possible surprise that they moved like in ACNL haha.

Also to expand on the little guide I wrote. If you find a villager that you don't want to move out with the thought bubble, don't talk to them at all. Just TT backwards or forwards between the 2 days to eventually find the desired villager to move out. If you talk to them and tell them to stay on your island, it resets the entire process, and doesn't help you at all. (Plus it makes it WAAAY less likely they'll ever get the thought bubble for a very long time)

This. People on here can and will "hold" villagers for you so you can re-adopt them to get their normal interior, IF you want it. I had Erik as one of my first villagers and I actually PREFERRED his basic interior to his normal one. Same with Merry.

And, yah. Your first two villagers are there when you move in- they will be a random jock and random sisterly. Then, you'll need to build three plots and add furniture. These plots will go to one random villager of each of these personalities- normal, peppy, and lazy (correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's it). THOSE FIVE villagers will have basic houses. The next villager will be a camper, almost always a smug (to the point where I think non-smug ones might actually be a glitch). Starting from them, they'll have normal interiors. As far as I know, during this process, you don't have the ability to adopt villagers from other people.

Yes, this is SO handy. I've always TTed and it's awesome that I don't have to worry about losing favorite villagers while doing so in this game!

Ok, so I guess I can't bypass the basic interiors by inviting someone else's villagers before they move in automatically? That's a bummer. This is such a weird feature, wtf Nintendo.

Personally, I really like it. I find it to be charming how the early villagers are really doing their best to forge a new life on a up-until-recently deserted island. Also, as I and others have said, some people prefer the basic ones over the ones they usually have. Either way, you can always have someone else hold the villager, or find them on a Nook Miles island after they've moved out and reinvite them, and they'll have the regular interior (in the latter case, though, they won't remember you- they'll essentially be a new version of that villager)

Just one final question: can we reset for villagers 3-5? There are some villagers that I think would look ok with that interior but I don't know if there's a particular order they stick to (kind of like in ACNL your last move-ins were Uchi and something else) or what.

Thanks to everyone who replied, this was really helpful. I think it's a cute feature in a way but also sucks when the basic interior doesn't suit them at all... or I guess if you're progressing in the game and they still have dirt floors.

You can stockpile Nook Miles Tickets (NMT) to visit as many mystery islands as possible to have a better chance to find villagers you like, but you can’t just reset. The way the islands work is that the game rolls for species first, and then randomly chooses one of the villagers from that species. There’s no order to it; it’s totally random and you can’t influence the results aside from using more tickets to increase the number of villagers you meet.

However, because the game rolls for species first, it’s easier to find specific villagers if their species has fewer villagers (like the octopi only having 3 total). That means it’s statistically easier to find someone like Zucker or Marina than one of the 23 different cats.

Villagers 3, 4, and 5 will be a lazy, a normal, and a peppy, and those are the only types you will see on mystery islands. At the beginning you will see a random mix of all 3 types. Once you invite a villager you won’t see villagers of that type anymore.

(So if you have a special normal, peppy, or lazy you wanted you could invite the other two villagers then have a slightly better chance of running into the one you want, because it will be a small pool of potential villagers. You can still get repeats though.)

The villagers you invite, don’t move in in the order you invite them but in a set order. I think it is lazy, then peppy, then normal. So when you set the houses, you will know who will move where.

I don’t know about resetting, but island hopping I think will be a way less painful way to get villagers you at least like, if not love. It is the most predictable the islands will every be, for villagers 7 on it is random drawing from all types.
