Question about villager 16 cycle after update?

Hi y'all! I haven't been on here in a few months. It's nice to see how many people are on here now after the update!
I've recently been into other games for a while but now with the update ACNL is looking really interesting and I'm probably gonna get sucked into it again! >.> lol

Anyways, Merry and Zell moved out of my town and honestly that's why I stopped playing so much because they are my two babies.
My brother confirmed for me that if you have their amiibo card, you can get a villager back without having to do the 16 villager cycle.

My question is, do you still have to do the 16 villager cycle to get a certain villager back without their card?
I unfortunately don't have either a Zell or Merry card.
I'll probably just buy their cards off of eBay or something if it's not possible, but I just wanted to check first. c:

I'm pretty sure you do still have to do the 16 villager cycle if you don't have their amiibo cards. Sorry .

Yeah, I'm for sure gonna do the same now! Lol I went to my local GameStop the other day to get some amiibo cards in hopes to get Merry, but they only had series 3 packs and they were all on clearance! I bought 3 packs anyways. I didn't get anything good besides Marina, and I don't really care for her anyways. xD

Damn. I was hoping it would be totally reset. I've got villagers on main street that weren't there before the update so thought it might have "broken" the cycle.

Right? I was hoping it would reset, too! But now I guess I get to have the fun of actually trading cards with people to get the villagers that I want.

Yep. A friend tried to get Mira back without having a card. The 16 villager cycle is only overridden if you invite them in via card.

That's at least good to know, just in case you accidentally void a dreamie, that there is a faster way to get them back :>

Without the card, everything pre-update remains, including the cycle. With the card, anyone can move in regardless! Pretty sure there is an update to the void and seeing villagers on Main Street. Sometimes I'd see one or two but now I see 3-4 past villagers shopping!

Yeah, that's what I figured but I just wanted to check just in case. I feel post-update, villagers will go for a lot less now in the trading thread. I feel like everyone will just try to get the cards of their favorite villagers and that way if they ever lose them, they can get them right back again. And that's cool about main street! I wonder if there is a list somewhere that someone made up that lists all of the changes from the update. I'd like to read it.

There are so many updates I'm not sure if such a list exists! I still think the villager trading market will be fairly good. Since you have to pay real money for the cards and they are hard to find when looking for specific ones unless you buy single cards, there will always be people looking to buy with TBT or IGB since they're free. That's just my two cents anyways.
