Question about inviting a villager from mystery island

Do I need to buy more lands from Tim Nook before I can invite someone from Mystery Island? I only have 8 villagers on my island right. But I dont want to buy all the available slot because I am afraid I may have some random moves from other island that I have visited.

If you have no empty plots available you won't see any villagers on the Mystery Islands.

You have to have at least one plot open and put down for villagers to spawn on islands.

If you have 8 plots and 7 villagers, for example, they will show up.

^This. If you all your homes already have residents living in them, then you're not going to find anyone on the mystery islands. I made the mistake of wasting NMT--thinking mystery islands worked the same way as campsites (and I wish they did), but they didn't.

I also bought some land from Nook and had random move-ins from other towns, so you're not wrong either. What I do now is hoard up NMT and travel whenever someone moves out and a home is up for sale/empty. If I can't find the villager I wanted, then I take whatever the last ticket can nab me or I take a chance on a tempting character and keep saving up NMT for next time.

So I need to buy 1 empty land from Tim Nook 1st before searching for my dreamies on Mystery Island? I recently gave away Marina to someone and that visitor also had someone moving out on her island so I am afraid if I buy an empty spot and can’t get my dreamie, I may end up with another random villagers
