is my placement right and I read that in order to make hybrid, you must purchase flowers, but I usually get my flowers from island tours. Is this true? And fertilizer is really necessary?

Where did you read that? A wiki? It's definitely not true o.o More than half of my flowers come from the island and it breeds a lot.
You do not need . That's like saying ice cream needs toppings lol.

For me, island flowers constantly spawned normal flowers and very rarely hybrids. I cleared them all out of my town and replaced them with bagged flowers and I am getting hybrids from them much more often with a very slim chance of a normal color. While fertilizer is not necessary to breeding flowers, it does guarantee the flowers around it will breed. However, whether or not that's a hybrid is luck of the draw.

Your placement is fine. I've read that planting diagonally was more effective in previous games then in New Leaf, but it's all speculation. As long as the flowers are adjacent be it vertically, horizontally, or diagonally they should produce more flowers. As to the hybrid part. Idk tbh. I have a mix of store bought and island freebies. I've managed to cultivate quite a few hybrids though regardless. It's more about placement, watering, and fertilizer as far as I've noticed. Also, fertilizer isn't necessary but it gives a boost to your chances.

I get a lot of orange and pink hybrids from my island flowers. It's all luck-based though. Try fertilizer and you WILL get hybrids.
