Question about gold axe

I accidentally sold my gold axe to Reese and am using my other villager for the sole purpose of getting another from Leif. I've lost count of how many saplings I've bought but I'm pretty sure it's been more than 50 saplings and Leif hasn't given me anything.

I've researched online and came across a forum post on gamespot or some similar type of website and someone mentioned that just picking up someone else's gold axe triggers something in the game that essentially tells it that you've had possession of it and can no longer receive it from Leif. And I know for a fact that the villager I am trying to get the gold axe had previously carried my now sold axe.

Can anyone else corroborate this for me so I'm not wasting my time with my villager?

I'm pretty sure that I've transferred my golden axe to a new game and still got another one from Leif, but I'm not for certain if it was the axe or the shovel... I can't really recall, it's been a few months. ^^;

Picking up another gold axe doesn't do anything. My second character used my gold axe plenty of times before getting his own gold axe so that shouldn't interfere with anything,

Lief will just automatically talk to you and give you one after buying enough saplings so perhaps you miss counted or brought a few saplings accidentally with your main character thinking it was your second. Just keep buying everyday. I'm sure you will get it soon. Or you could just buy another one on the forums. Good luck either way c:

No you can still get a new one. I bought a gold shovel from the forums, but I still managed to get another from Leif months later after purchasing some fertilizer.

Phew!! That's good news. I'd hate to have to restart with another villager O_O
