Question about giving villagers clothing / sending them letters

I'm giving my villagers something daily (could be clothing or any item in their fav. colour) and I'm also sending them letters every now and then.
Usually I'm getting the items I've send to them gifted back to me, so is it me giving them to much everytime or is it normal that they give it back or wear it for one day and then never again (altough this happens rarely)?
Or should I give/change the items I give with fruit/shells or whatever instead of clothing? And does it affect my friendship level a lot if I skip a day of not giving them something?

I give them non native fruit once a day and I send them all a letter once a day.. I no longer give them clothing or furniture...

I've also got 2 photos so far, from Teddy and Filbert. But I have so many clothes in their (according to the guide) color scheme, that I'm giving that instead of fruit, because I don't have a lot of that.

So If I don't send them a letter each day I wont risk losing one of my villagers?
