Question about getting a new villager

If I had a villager in boxes today and now it says they have moved am I able to go to someone elses town now and adopt a villager who is in boxes in their town? Or do I have to wait till my villagers house is gone? TIA

I found out by trying to adopt a villager that it cannot be done so am closing this thread.
