My birthday is coming up and I'm wondering which villager will take me to the surprise birthday like in the other games. In New Leaf I know that the villager you are closest with is who shows up outside your door, but I was wondering if it is the same in New Horizons. Can anyone confirm this?

I can't completely confirm it but when my birthday came up, the villagers that were on my birthday party scene were definitely those I had talked more to. In my case Stitches (5th move in), Bangle (4th move in) and Bam (starting villager). That was my experience. Though I need to tell you, please save the day before with something nice on (or that you'd like to be on in your birthday party), or at least have the wand with you. I saved without the wand on my inventory and I have now birthday photos on a punk lolita outfit and a bandage on my eye lol
I believe this is still true. Al was the one who took me to his house for the surprise, and seeing as my Birthday happened early in the game's release, I simply didn't have enough time to get closer to my dreamies I brought in with amiibo. Al was my closest villager from the original move ins.
