So I just made an alt character, not main. To my understanding, because I have neither an NNID and a paid online membership they will not be able to acsess the design kiosk in the Ables. Their current ground designs are also the same exact ones that my main has.

However I thought I would be able to atleast make clothes that won't be shared with my main, even if I can't upload them. It's my characters second day in town and I'm unable to even have designed clothes. The app on the phone is only stuck on the ground patterns, it wont even give me the option to view clothes, so I can't make any.

Do I just need to wait for somethin to happen? Do I need to talk to Mabel or Sable? This is my first alt and I don't remember how I acsessed designs on tje first place, it was months ago.

You need to buy the ability to do pro designs from the Nook Miles store... machine thing at Resident services!

Then they can make them just like your main character :)

I thought all the custom design patterns and clothing where shared among all players on the island? But you'll see the pro design app from the Nook Miles store first.

They are, but I don't think you can access that tab at all until you get the Pro Design upgrade from the Nook Stop (I checked what it was called, lol)

This makes so much sense thank you! I skimmed over the Nook miles thing once but didn't pay attention to what I was looking at.

To my knowledgeable, yes def all regular not pro designs are shared, this I know for certain. I've seen other people have alt characters who create pro designs (clothing) so I just wanted to be sure.

I was gonna make another alt who dresses a very certain way (Victorian/Renaissance/Goth) but since I can't get designs online (I refuse to pay for another membership with only 1 switch) I was gonna have to design all her clothes myself. If my alt wasn't able to make their own clothes I wasn't even gonna bother making her.

Wait... if you have an online membership, your alt character can use any items your main character (with the membership) saves, though?

I mean... I'm 99% sure I've used designs I've gotten online with my alts...

EDIT: I just checked. If you have an online membership on your main (based on what you've said... it seems you might?) you can save designs and have alternate characters wear them, even if they weren't the ones who used the kiosk and saved them. Admittedly I didn't try it with pro-designs (I don't have any I've gotten off the internet) but my alt was able to wear a downloaded pattern as a shirt. So I can't imagine it'd be different for pro-designs!
I mean, if you wanna design all your outfits, that sounds cool! But if you're only doing it because you don't think you can get them off the internet, I don't think it's necessary.

I can use all the regular ground pattern design cause they all show up in my alts design menu, I can even terraform with them, as far as I know. I just can't edit them, even if my main created them cause they still technically belong to my main.

It's the pro designs I think that aren't shared. I saw someone on social media buy a second online membership to upload more pro designs since they reached the 130 limit of their main. They bought a second online sub and got another creator code. This is Bramblescrossing if you're familiar with her.

You can terraform, but you need to buy the upgrade from the Nook Stop. And I'm guessing the "not being able to edit" aspect is for when multiple people share a Switch and each character is literally run by a different person- you wouldn't want your little sibling messing up the flag you worked hard on, for example.

And that's... super weird, I had no idea.
(also, I don't follow any sort of social media things, so I wouldn't know of them 😅)

Soooo, I just got the pro designer thing aaand my alt has all the same designs as my main, both regular and pro :/

Ah, okay. Well, that's good, then!
(I mean, there would be some advantages if they didn't, but Nintendo just needs to give us more storage space in general)

...I'm guessing the difference is you can't UPLOAD them is your alt makes them? Maybe?

Well, currently this had a good and bad side. Good, even if my main user has an online sub, everyone (alt users) can use the patterns my main gets from online.

Bad, I thought I was going to be able to make more clothes, even if I couldnt upload them.

I deleted a design using my alt, made a pro and saved and woke up my main. My main has that design. So it seems they truly do share all designs. I'm going to see if my alt can acsess the design portal.

Edit: my alt can NOT use the design portal.
