Question about a villager moving out

Ok so one of my villagers, Mallary, is in boxes and is said to be moving out tomorrow.

I've always been curious about how people sell and trade their villagers and it never really made sense to me but I think I understand now. If a friend comes over to my town and talks to Mallary while her house is in boxes, can they ask Mallary to move into their town? Is that how it works?

Yep! That's how it works. As long as the villager is in boxes (ready to move the next day) and the person picking up the villager doesn't have a full town or previously owned the villager, they will be able to talk to the villager and move into their town.
