I am two of those pieces away from having the complete AC puzzle D:

How on earth do people get the purple tiles?

You need to streetpass someone that has them already and then they become available to you. I'm fortunate in that I have street passed 4 Nintendo reps (they have all the puzzle pieces available. ) try a nintendo zone or toy store. You can ask them what day the nintendo rep visits.

As stated already, you need to streetpass as much as possible. When I'm clearing puzzle pieces I always grab any pink/purple ones available and work on plain ones if no other options.

yep, like mousehole said the only way to get those (for any puzzle) is through streetpass! (also wow I had no clue nintendo reps visited stores!!! lol)

I work in a toy store... :) that is the only place I could have picked them up and I make it a habit to ensure my DS is in sleep mode when I start my shift. I had thought only the Nintendo vendors visited the stores to ensure stock and promotional signage was correct, but apparently their bosses also visit to make sure that they're checking in on a regular basis.

If you go to conventions (especially anime or video game conventions), you pick up TONS there. I've finished 3 or 4 puzzles just from going to one convention.

(But in general, any place highly populated with older children/teenagers/young adults is likely to get you at least a couple.)

I'm attending Bronycon in August, so I always bring my DS everywhere just in case I get a streetpass and get a tile I'd like, so I'll absolutely pick up tiles from there. Sucks that we can't get them as some sort of ingame function, but oh well.

If you're incredibly lucky whenever you get a new panel via SpotPass, the puzzle piece you'll receive will end up being pink rather than blue. It will then spread over and over the more you and the players whom you StreetPassed with actually passes on nearby 3DS player(s). A puzzle panel that has a few purple spots and is out since 3 months is easier to fill up than a recently released panel. So, your priority should be focusing on pink pieces for the most recent panels possible.

Alternatively, there's a far more tedious method of getting pink puzzle pieces quickly if you can't go on gaming-related conventions. If you have a spare 3DS, you can just try to attempt geting one or more of the elusive puzzle pieces and wipe that system's memory on every failed attempt. If you got at least one of these pieces, make sure you StreetPass with your main 3DS to collect it.
Even better, if you do receive a special Mii from SpotPass, absolutely get one of the pink pieces you wanted everytime until the Mii's no longer being distributed. These Miis always come with all of the puzzles completed. You'll want to redo the trick from above, this time using SpotPass and hoping for that gold pant Mii to come to your spare system. Getting those rare pieces have gotten much less daunting with this trick, but being armed with patience and commitment is still a must here.

Didn't realize Nintendo Reps were kind of special like that. I know the SpotPass Miis are, that's usually how I get all the Purple/Pink Pieces. Organize it with local StreetPass meetups or friends, got them all.

I have never received a pink piece as my first piece on a new puzzle since buying the 3DS on its original release...you have to hope at least someone else has found one.
