Problem with tree/bush placement...

I'm having a little bit of trouble with bush and tree placement. I had shrubs and starts die on me and I didn't expect it.

Here's a picture of the dead bush:

I thought that bushes can only die if there are 13 of them in a row, including adjacent bushes. I don't have 13 in a row and thought the trees did not affect it because they are separated by an empty space.

Now, I thought because 2nd and 3rd column of trees are separated by two spaces, it would be ok to plant the trees in the way I did.

Is this just bad luck and shoots can randomly die? Or is this a pattern placement problem with the game?

I think they're just in dead spots since you didn't do 13 in a row O:

Dead spots you can't grow anything there other than flowers

Grr I didn't even know that's a thing ... so disappointing.
Is that the case for the tree as well?

this happened to me before, and seeing that you planted many baby saplings in the ground all at once, the game suddenly makes reality hit and say "there's not enough nutrition for these babes, i'll kill one sapling".. usually, I wait the next day and plant a new one and that one usually grows fine..
