Preserving Silver Axes Question

Silver axes break like normal axes, right? Except they'll definitely leave a pattern on the stump.
So let's say you had a gold axe and a silver axe (or a regular axe and a silver axe, doesn't really matter). Could you just use the gold axe for the first two swings then use the silver axe for the last swing? Would that leave a pattern on the stump or would it be normal?

I just tried it; it made a triforce pattern, and I tried it again, it made a normal trunk. Once more, triforce.

It works, I've literally only ever needed my one silver axe to make my patterns in town, and it's still not breaking at all lol
