Practical way to let friends know your gate is open or asking to open theirs?

Making and adding friends onto 3DS is one thing, but getting to contact them is another....you think you'd be able to IM your 3ds friends on the system but I suppose that 'd be a little too convenient. Anyways I was wondering if there's a practical way to let friends know if your gate is open or to ask if theirs is...I have ideas, but I'd rather hear people's suggestions first. Thanks in advance!

In the friend chat on the mail screen tell the person to open there gate,if u are BF u can call the person or send a PM on Facebook,or pick a date and time and send a swapnote

I BF pretty much all my friends, so I simply could just tell them that my gate is open or ask them to open theirs.

When you have a friend in your town, you can click on the lower left button on the touch screen, which will open a list of the people in your town. There will be a heart next to their name and all you have to do it click it. They have to also add you as well for it to work. There is a limit, however, to how many best friends you can add. I think it's 32 if I remember correctly.

i put it on my friend message thing when my gates are open and i send a message to my best friends that they're open as well
