Posts from a teacher

you said they shouldn't have children if they couldn't raise them.
was a litle too close for me not to make a connection.
the old abortion thread was awful, in that nothing was resolved.
I didn't mean to imply abortion at all. What I meant was, those kind of couples shouldn't have children in the first place, not abort them if the mother is already pregnant...

:/ This kind of makes me sad considering you were talking about mentally deficient parents. A lot of times no matter how the parent is the kid could turn out normal, and why should they not be able to experience the joy of raising a child like the rest of us? Most of the time the child can help out the parents and it makes them a stronger person, and not so quick to judge other people that are like their parents.

My mom is kind of mentally handicapped. She has a few problems with memory, and generally being able to put things together, but she still had me. I kind of take offense to the fact that you're saying it shouldn't have happened. Her status has nothing to do with my own education level, or ability to learn. In fact, I'm one of the first in my family to go to college, and that's a real job considering I've got a few problems myself.

Education in america has nothing to do with the teachers, or the government, it has to do with kids that are too damn lazy to pick up a book or do some research on their own. After all, school is the experience you make of it, and if you piss it away it's your own damn fault.

Holy crap! I in NO way meant mentally ill. I was using the term "mentally deficient" to just describe people who don't know how to raise children and would rather dump them in a failing education system. In other words, just a fancier way of saying "dumb/stupid/lazy". Also, you're totally wrong about education in America having "nothing to do" with teachers. Kids don't just magically become lazy. They become what they are through a combination of nature and nurture. While the former can't really be influenced, the latter is in control of the parents, the teachers, and the facilities in which these children learn.

I think he was talking about lazy parents. :/

I don't really think that it's the education system in America as much as the kids that are too damn stupid to take a responsible standpoint on their own education. For all of middle school I missed over 200 days. No, I'm not exaggerating. As soon as high school started however, I actually had a reason to want to go to school besides friends, I was genuinely interested in what was going on. Ironically, I had the problem in public school, but never charter school. I think it's just the fact that charter school is more intense, and I think it should be something that's more difficult to get into, and for the students that actually give a damn.
This defines my school experience. I'm with you here ZR. I would purposely miss days in Middle School because we never learned anything. I would do all my own learning at home and be decades ahead of the class. School was just a social place for me. However, once I entered Private School (where I am now), things drastically changed. Kids actually care (most do, some are transfers that cannot add without a calculator) because if they get kicked out, their parents are out about $8000. Not saying all kids should be forced into PS, because most families (including mine) cannot afford it without help.

There are three pieces of the pie in this kind of situation:

1. Parents: If the parents don't care about their kids, then they're not going to encourage them in school and let them grow as individuals.

2. Kids: If the kids themselves don't want to care, then they won't learn and grow.

3. Environment: When I was in Public School, the teachers wouldn't call anyone out or "get anyone in trouble" for the first six weeks. This gave the kids that were just there "because my ma made me" opportunities to screw up and get away with it. Sometimes, they're just too relaxed with the rules. Everyone has to feel good about themselves there as well. There are no losers.

Ok, let's not get into this.
Get into what? My "conscious or not" comment was a reference to both sides of the abortion debate. What I'm saying is, no matter what side of the fence you're on, there's no way you can infer an abortion reference from my original post.

Not really. One is killing something alive, whether conscious or not, and the other is not giving life to another human being in the first place.
i said nothing about abortion aside from mentioning that the thread had reminded me of it, and that i didn't want it to end up going there. the only reason i was reminded was because of the "if you can't have children you shouldn't be pregnant" thing that came up in the other topic.

i in no way meant that i was voicing any opinion about abortion, other than that i didn't want this thread to veer in that direction.

Ah, makes sense. Confusion all-around then, I guess...

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I don't think it's possible to pinpoint any one thing and say "aha, that's the SOLE reason for declining educational standards in this country". So anybody saying "oh, it's because of *insert thing here*" is automatically wrong. It's much more than any one factor.

Ok let me just start by saying I have had a Long day, so please excuse any spelling errors.
This was basically my expirience with public school middle school too. Except for that "social aspect". I was hated and ignored all across the board. The people that worked at the office/non teachers ignored me....
After school one day, some kid wrote di** on my locker, it took them THREE WEEKS, to get around to cleaning it off, AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN DO IT, THEY HANDED ME THE CLEANING SUPPLIES AND WALKED OFF LAUGHING DOWN THE HALL WAY
There was only on- two teachers who cared about me at middle school and only one truley didn't want me to leave for homeschool...the other just needed me due to the fact that our choir had No Talent....

tl:dr : I agree with bacon boy if he was un-liked (anti-social)
