For me, this is one of the most underrated series of all time. These games (with the exception of gates to infinity, major disappointment IMO) have brought so much nostalgia and emotion to my gaming experience. Few stories in other video games can even come close to the storytelling quality of the mystery dungeon series, particularly explorers of sky, time and darkness, and I thought the gameplay was good too. While people argue that it was repetitive, I thought that doing different missions each day in between story arcs was a fun way to collect items for future challenges and level grind. It's no more repetitive than the main pokemon series. Anyway...

Did you enjoy these games? If not, why not, or if so, do share!

Yes I did enjoy them. I have the original game boy advance and DS games which I played to basically completion though I don't have all friend pokemon. I also played the other DS games. The 3DS one does not appeal to me as much and I've only played the demo. Certainly had a lot of fun but the same mechanics annoy me with each game.

For instance I hated how you could get far in a dungeon only taking small amounts of damage, then suddenly something hits you for 200, usually critical, and you die. There wasn't enough in terms of healing mechanics, though the healing over steps was useful. Primal dialga was a pain in the backside I don't think I ever actually beat him, so Explorers of Time/whatever remains incomplete for me.

I love this series! I'm also surprised as to why not many people talk about it, sometimes I don't even realize that new installments have been out for a while because no one says anything :(

I remember really liking the game, but I don't remember anything about it. All I remember is catching Mew.

Oh man, I loved Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky. ;u; They were such charming games, and I loved playing every second of it (and I tried too tbh and I still cry about it now 7 years later). Speaking of which, I can't believe it came out seven years ago o:

As for Gates to Infinity, I agree. I was quite excited to see a new PMD with the newer pokemon, but the whole plot line was not as good as the others tbh. And personally, I found it very easy, where as the older games were much harder. It was a bit of a let down :( And I miss being able to take the Quiz for your Pokemon, I didn't want any of the Pokemon that you could choose in the new one. Oh well. I hope the first PMD games get a remake or something!

I always liked the series. I liked Gates to Infinity as well, though it was way easier than the other games, that's a problem with a lot of games that made the transition to 3D though (maybe because the 3D era happens to also be the era of dumbing down games for newbies?).

I've not played all of them but it's still a series that I enjoy. Most of the reason I didn't play them all was pretty much that it's one of those games that store tend to have little or no stock of. This was an issue before I had a debit card and internet was a common thing.

I can easily see why it isn't that popular though and why not that many people really like it.

And I miss being able to take the Quiz for your Pokemon, I didn't want any of the Pokemon that you could choose in the new one. Oh well.

I never liked the quiz. It always ended up giving me a Pokemon I didn't care for. I always ended up resetting the game till I got something I liked.

I liked the manual selection in Gate to Infinity, I just didn't really like the Pokemon you could choose, so I just went with Pikachu since I don't hate him (which is probably the nicest thing I'll say bout him)...

They should definitely add more Pokemon to the selection. It's pretty much just '3 newest starters', Pikachu and a random other Pokemon...Why don't they just let you use practically any other Pokemon already in the game? That would be awesome, then I could actually be one of my favorites rather than a slim selection that I'm usually not too fond of.

I really like this series but the 3ds version killed it for me. I felt like it wasn't the same without the silly quiz or the countless pokemon you could be.

From the 3ds version demo I already knew it wasn't the same. I missed the quiz and selection of pokemon too.

Haha, we were talking about this a few weeks ago! ^_^ Anyway, I love the Mystery Dungeon games (I never got to play Gates to Infinity and apparently I lucked out...), but these games are so fun. I recently took a small piece of my tax refund to rebuy copies of Blue Rescue Team and Explorers of Time. The plots of these games are just so...wow. I remember reading reviews for these games in Game Informer way back when and I remember thinking, "Um, did we even play the same game?" I can get why people wouldn't like the ever-changing dungeons, but that helped keep it fresh for me.

Plus I loved the quizzes; it gave so many options for your choice of Pokemon...even though I would usually reset until I got who I wanted.

So true! And even though the quizzes were sometimes a pain, it's true that it gave you more options. Plus it was interesting to see all the different personality types associated with each Pokemon.

I'm surprised by how little love this series seems to get as well. I like this spin-off a lot more than the main games... Explorers of Sky has to be my favourite one. I think I'll go back and replay it no bad Piyoko think of your town!
I had heard Gates of Infinity was disappointing, so I've avoided purchasing it. It looks like I heard right. :( I guess I'll wait for whatever comes after.

yea, the games were really good, but gates to infinity ruined it for me... i think they just got too trigger happy about the 3DS and tried to make the game look good using the 3DS's capabilities instead of making it feel good.

I really missed having all Pokemon in the game. If they'd kept it to their pixel sprites and included all Pokemon I probably would'e enjoyed it, but I didn't.

Explorers of Sky if defs my favorite one in the series.

Definitely! And I liked how certain pokemon were only available based on which gender you chose. Eevee, I'm lookin' at you.

Here's what killed Gates to Infinity for me[and as I went digital, I'm stuck with it]:

1. Lack of gender choice. You HAVE to be male. As is your partner.
2. 5 Playable Pokemon. 4 of which suck. One is Pikachu[Stop it, Nintendo!].
3. Crappy story
4. Way too easy
5. Never. Stops. Holding. The. Players. Hand. Ever. EVER.
6. Your forced to progress the story when a story mission comes up. Free Play pretty much doesn't exist until post game.
7. No post game content. None. Nothing. Nadda.

Explorers of Sky was my favorite one! So many things to do!
I had played Explorers of Time before and I was surprised at how better they made the game.
I didn't even bother with Gates of Infinity based on what I'd heard, but I guess I didn't miss much :p

Gates of Infinity is AWFUL. Can't stack missions!

Explorers of Sky/Darkness is amazing. Love it. I also used a code to change my Pokemon to what Pokemon I want.

Hero:

Blue rescue team was beautiful
I come back to it every now and then.
The music is brilliant especially sky tower

I loved the games, especially explorers of Sky, as it was the first game to make me cry, since you disappear after you beat the main story.
I really hope that when gen 4 is inevitably remade, I hope that they bring back Primal Dialga.

I tried the demo for Gates to Infinity, and my reaction was the same as MayorLou's.
I can easily see why it isn't that popular though and why not that many people really like it.

Why do you think that is, just wondering.

I absolutely adore PMD as much as the main series. The mechanics are great (albeit repetitive, but so are the main series so not much of a change) and it brings such a new light to the franchise. I really wish they'd go back to the old models in the DS and GBA versions, those were really nice imo. My favorite is Explorers of Sky (my first one). I lost it a few years back and the only one I have now is Explorers of Darkness, which is good but lacks some extra features that I liked in Sky. To this day, I still look for Sky in the hopes I can play it again.
