Soo I'm trying to get Chief to move into a certain spot, but he won't move there. I'm pretty new to ACNL and therefore also new to plot resetting, and I'm wondering if the trouble is that the spot in front of his door is covered with a pattern.

This is where I want his house to be (yes, there are currently flowers there lol, but I don't mind losing them because they're ones villagers put down and I'm breeding hybrids elsewhere).

He's plotted a couple of spaces back a few times, but I really want him lined up with Agent S's house. A lot of the guides I've looked at were from before the Welcome Amiibo update and apparently some things changed with that regarding patterns and plot resetting. So is the problem that the pattern is in front of where his door would be, or do I need to just keep trying and he'll eventually plot here? Also, if the problem is that the pattern is in front of the door, is there a way for me to TT back and use my mayor to remove the pattern and then go back to plot resetting with my alt character?

I think you might just be extremely unlucky. I've seen plenty of people say they've had villagers move in front of a pattern in the Welcome Amiibo update. I'm guessing the pattern is removed the next day.

It should be fine. (btw love your pfp lol) What I did to get my villagers all in a row is i basically put designs everywhere, then I put a 3x3 space with designs all around it. i think you just have to keep trying.

This is what happened to me. Wouldn't move into any of the spots I set for her and I also thought maybe it was pattern being in front of where the door is... But i think we are just really genuinely unlucky lol

Don't give up!! :) Also with the TTing thing, I posted a thread yesterday too haha someone said that instead of changing the time with your mayor, change your 3ds clock to a few hours back? I didn't try it though because by the time they said that I had already given up lol

Yeah that's what I do in my town. It doesn't look pretty, but it's tolerable if you make them the same color as the ground. And it's only temporary.

Thank you all! I'm on plot reset 37 so it's not like I've been going forever but I'm starting to get a bit frustrated because he's plotted several times in the same spots (he basically goes between the same 6-7 spots, 2 of which are close to where I want him but not quite there yet) but he refuses to plot here. If he's not plotted here by reset 50, I think I'm going to try what meggtheegg said and change my 3DS clock back so I can use my mayor again to put down new patterns. Argh I hate being an impatient person and I know it'll be worth it when I finally get him in this spot but.....I'm still annoyed lol.

Agreed. I'm waiting until my last dreamie is moved in before I pull up those patterns. Until then I just work around them.

Your plot space seems valid so just keep resetting, I guess. I just hope you didn't run into this so called acre limit and no, you don't need to erase the pattern in front of the door. The plot itself is 3x3 initially so don't think about the door yet XD Once the villager house is there, the pattern in front will be gone anyway.

Very tired due to RL currently, so not sure how useful:
Chief plotting a few spaces back: with the update villagers will try and plot where there are no patterns (Nintendo did this as players were complaining villagers were taking out paths - we got a Twitter with Nook apologising). If there is not enough space then the villager will take out patterns.

So no patterns at the back of the preferred plot & a pattern where the door space should be - well it might possibly effect where he plots. Possibly.

Plot resetting - whether to use the ingame clock ie via Isabelle at the front screen or using the system clock to change date & time (in system settings) and then loading the game?

The problem with using the ingame clock is you cannot change time with a new save file (NSF) which means you have to load with the Mayor or alt first to be able to change the time. The problem with this is the game saves and sets what is in the game as the character loads. And you can't undo what is done with that save. So to use this method you have to load the game the prior day with the Mayor/alt (around 5.55am) to change the time.

I like to keep things simple. I always change time with the system clock and then load the game. The only main issue with this is if you play other games that pick up time from the system.

You then don't have to load the game with the Mayor or alt, you start the new day with a NSF - it has to be the very first play of that ingame day - if you load with an existing character first you will save as you load.
What time you load within that day with the NSF is up to you, just that it is the first load of that day.
When you get what you want with the NSF - you must save the game with this NSF to 'set' the game. This is essential.

Hope this may help you figure out if you can go back and remove the pattern in front of door (maybe add a row of patterns at the back of the plot (not too close). (I'm too tired to work out if you can go back or not, sorry).

As an aside: the relationship between the ingame clock and the system clock.
The game picks up the time from the system when it loads. If you change time with Isabelle then, the system and the ingame clock won't be the same. Any offset between the two remains when you load the game again. That's OK and I presume a lot of players play this way. You can manually change them to be the same (if you wanted to) using a 3rd RL clock that shows seconds.

Personally I prefer to always change time with the system, (I don't play any other games) so that my two times are in sync. I change time all the time as I freeze it to play every ingame day, tho can't play every day in RL. Neither my system nor my game are set in real time - does not affect going to other towns on different dates, streetpass, DLC (when we had it) nor system updates (tho that can change time back to the present, I just change it back to what I want).
