So I recently started a new file and decided to do the plot reset trick for my 6th villager, but have gotten it in the same location 3 times. Is this a coincidence? Or do I have to get 8 villagers first? :/

No, it's normal. Sometimes villagers prefer certain spots in your town and will place their house on those spots multiple times. Just keep resetting and eventually they will move their plot placement. Good luck!

What is plot resetting?
Sorry if you mind me asking

plot resetting is when you reset the game until you're content with the placement of a villager's home. it's done by starting up your game with a new save file and not with your mayor on the day you're expecting a new villager to plot down in your town (plotting is before their house is placed down permanently, when all you get is a roped off area). you go through the train ride, create a character, and look around your town. if the plot is placed where you're content, you save the game on that character (so you go talk to isabelle, get a house with tom nook, etc until you can save the game). if you're not happy with the placement of the plot, you quit the game without saving and repeat those steps.

villager resetting is something similar, but basically this is when you're resetting your game for villagers rather than simply placement of the plot. people may refer to them as different things to differentiate between whether you're plot resetting for a villager you've asked to move in (either from a campsite or from adopting them from another town) and resetting for certain villagers you want in your town when you're getting a move-in from having less than 9 villagers in your town. that was probably longwinded but i hope that makes sense.

That makes some sense, so it's to get the house in the right area?
Thanks!

Yep. They will often put there houses in front or by yours and other player houses

That is what I have found out anyway! Just keep trying, it is trial and error I'm afraid

Thanks everyone!
