Plot Reset Advice?

So I'm plot resetting for Merengue, and she plopped her house in a good spot! I was thinking of using that spot for another character, but I forgot to check if Nook will even let me build there!

So, question:
1. How much space does a character's house take up?
(not an animal villager!)

The space is 5 across. It's between a rock and the cliff, so I had to subtract two spaces.
Now that I'm typing this I don't think there's space for another character's house... But I'd really like someone else's input!

I tried to build a house at such a spot and it was too close to the cliff/river.

it can't fit the house length wise which is 4 tile spaces (or was it 5 including the door opening), that strip of land is too narrow.

I think it would fit since the spot I failed to place a house in had the river and cliff at the sides with only one space from the house(assuming it fits)

I don't think a character's house needs a lot more space in front and back than a villager's house and it looks like there's a lot of spare spaces.

Player house plots are physically 5 across by 3 down, but you need extra spaces near the front. From what I've tried, house 'hitboxes' look something like this:

And Hoppy I'm sorry about your 3DS that sucks. They're releasing new 3DS models with the interchangeable plates though, so hopefully you can get one of those in the future!
