plaid designing help please!

hey everyone! i don't know if this is the right forum section to post in but i need some advice. i made plaid designs in acnl but in acnh everytime i try to make squares they just end up being circles? i don't have an image to show as a reference right now so i'm sorry about that. any advice on making plaid designs in acnh?

So for a smaller plaid, at least as far as I’ve figured, it really just comes down to the colors matching close enough that they pixelate instead of auto-smoothing. Which is an absolute pain.
HOWEVER my solution for a larger plaid is to checker within the squares themselves, some edges still might want to smooth a tiny bit but you won’t end up with those circles!

Alternative solution: having one of your colours as transparent and using in-game path as a background (see also: I am too lazy to make borders for this design)
