Placing carpets?

I have been trying for a half hour to place carpets at my campsite. I want one carpet on each side but every time I pick a carpet it places it smack between the two sides so the one that was there is removed by the new one. Is this supposed to happen?

I tried moving the carpet on one side all the way over and going all the way over to the other side when I click on place item but it still plops it smack in the middle of the two sides removing the carpet that is there

I really want a different carpet on both sides, am I doing something wrong, or is this just how the game is going to be?

I think you can only have one carpet outside. I haven't been successful at trying to place two either and I'd really like to as well.
