It seems you don't have to fight other characters in the story mode. Looking at the pictures you face goombas, koopas, and some possibly new enemies.

The guy from "this word" also can copy moves from your character.

Kirby has to suck them up though... I'm thinking that Evil McBadGuy will just have to have contact with the characters, like in the original Megaman cartoon.
