...With downloadable content for WiiWare titles. This was mentioned at GDC, and now it's actually happening.

http://gonintendo.com/?p=38698

If you ask me, downloadable content is the latest scheme to get more money out of the consumer. Back in the day, all this content was included on the actual cartridge/disk, but now, since it's more profitable to engage in the "microtransation market"... that's what we're seeing here.

that particular DLC is just a rip-off, I mean, wasn't it a given to have all of them already?

I usually love DLC though, especially with things like Rock Band (too bad there isn't gonna be DLC for Rock Band Wii :() I also love it when there are demos, but I don't think Ninty's gonna do that, at least not right now.

$1-3 isn't bad, but they're taking things away from us that we figured we'd have straight out of the bo-... WiiWare... thing... >_<

Yeah, agreed. Though, actually, maybe not.

I was reading an IGN hands-on of the game, and they say that there's no downloadable content available yet. That led them to think that Square-Enix is actually still working on new dungeons and stuff. So stuff like that wouldn't have been available if DLC wasn't there.

If you've played any mmorpg's with the ability to pay for extras, this wouldn't be new to anyone, but of course this is just another way to squeeze money out of the consumer. I guess that's what most companies are looking to do.

Quite. I'm sure the amount of money you'll spend on the game for all the extra crap will equal just about a new 360.

Uhh, no.

It'll probably cap out at $30 or $40... essentially a cheap, retail game.

And that's being really generous. I highly doubt too many people will be dishing out for every single extra, but even if they did, I'm pretty sure it won't reach any higher than this.

:P

Nintendo isn't making great games anymore, and now they're trying to get every dollar they can out of us. Go to hell Nintendo.

That statement reeks of so much ignorance, I'm not even going to bother debunking it.

Edit - Well, I guess I will take a stab at it.

#1 - You realize that microtransactions have been around for years? Nintendo's actually late to the game.
#2 - My Life As a King is not a Nintendo game. So, who "they"? Square-Enix? Last time I checked, they have an excellent track record.
#3 - Nintendo isn't making great games anymore, huh? So... care to back that up? I'm sure there are a ton of games out there you haven't played that are excellent. Speaking of which...
#4 - What does Nintendo have to do with Pay & Play? They were most likely pressured by developers/publishers who wanted to take advantage of downloadable content.
#5 - And speaking of other developers/publishers, maybe you should expand your horizons instead of being restricted to Nintendo's games.

OK, sorry... my mistake was narrowing my statement towards Nintendo... goes towards pretty much the whole industry.

If you're talking about "getting every dollar they can out of us [consumers]", then you're right.

But what you might not realize is that that's the way it's been since the beginning. That's the way it has been -- and still is -- in every market. Nobody, other than the actual designers/programmers/team members, care about "making the customer happy". They care more about seeing your money than your smile.

umm... Brawl?
Overrated.

;)

Just Melee with improvements... not a whole new game.

Anyone expecting a "whole new game" was setting themselves up for massive disappointment.

You can't rehaul a formula like Smash, you can just refine it.

Should be 20 bucks then.

Oh yeah, that definitely justifies all the new content. Online play, new characters, new stages, completely new physics engine, Subspace Emissary, new graphics engine... :\
