Original villagers (question)

What does it mean for a villager to be fully original? I’ve read this phrase many times. Does this mean solely gotten through mystery islands or campsites?

Also, I saw someone saying how a villager that they had adopted/purchased would wear a shirt from a previous owner. Does this not make them original any longer? Does it matter if they were gifted items or articles of clothing? And do these items carry over on a new island?

Just curious.

Original means they have not been given any clothes/furniture, and have their original greeting/catchphrase.
Custom patterns that the villager wears as well as the greeting/catchphrase can be reset by talking to Isabelle, but the gifted clothing/furniture can't be. When someone else adopts them, they would have the same clothes & furniture that had been gifted on their previous island.

@lulu9956 Oh interesting. I’m impressed that some people can keep them fully original. Especially if they want to gain their photo before they’re traded off. I’m assuming many just trade them right away.

To keep them original but still build friendships, gifting foreign fruit (especially wrapped) is a great option!

You have to avoid the quests to deliver stuff between two villagers too, because a lot of the time that stuff is clothing. Usually unflattering or awkward clothing (I am so happy Annalise enjoys the Morning Glory Yukata more than the Maid Outfit Punchy gave her). Of course, if you're feeling nice you can just keep filling their clothing inventory with the original stuff they wear and then they're practically original, apart from the occasional comment.

This is what I do. It’s not that I’m against giving them furniture, I just don’t like giving them bugs and fish and I always have tons of fruit anyway.

I didn’t even think about the quests. Wow lots of tiny hurdles to keep them original. Thanks for all the replies!
