We've all seen overdone and overused room/house themes:
  • Cafe
  • Hotel
  • Bakery
  • Regular house rooms
  • Asian/Japanese rooms
  • etc

Then the un-creative 'use a whole set only'
(I know people have reasons though. I do in extra character houses that I have only for QR spaces.)

But what are some original or unusual house/room themes you have seen?
Have you ever tried to re-create one?
What do you think about 'copying' people's ideas (but not flat-out stealing the whole thing)?

Right now I'm working on making one house a garden center and while it's not exactly original (I assume, though I haven't seen it before), I'm making a cozy cabin themed house. I'm also working on a marine-themed kitchen for one of my mayors houses.

A lot of people have said that they like how I combine and mix up sets and themes in my characters' houses before (which I'll admit is something I like to do a lot). In Starpass, I'm creating and observatory and labs and sort of like a Mars rover testing site room? Still have a lot of work to do, ahaha.

That sounds really cool actually! Do you need any help getting items for those rooms? I have a lot of outer space-type stuff in my catalog. The biggest bummer is that the star projector doesn't actually do anything though.

I'm planning on setting up my basement as a sort of amateur biologist's lab, and my upstairs room as a greenhouse! The main floor is going to be pretty normal, though... the main room will be a foyer/living room, the left will be a kitchen, the back will be my bedroom, and the right will be a study/den.

my Skyrim theme town has a bunch of rustic themed rooms... a creepy ancient library, dig site, weapons room!

Zephyr has a bunch of funny rooms too, like the backyard fun room of my main room, live studio talk show, upstairs swank lounge, basement fruit dessert cafe, cozy christmas kitchen

I used to have an arcade room and a sci-fi gym in my first town. As far as I remember the arcade room had a share of refurbished capsule machines, an arcade game, crane game, pinball, and a karaoke machine. Nope, no fortune cookie items used. The sci-fi gym had robo furniture with a mix of gym equipments and gyroids.

Right now, I'm setting up my house into a dormitory. But I gotta pay up those mortgages first. I'm avoiding the pastel color scheme with cutesy items and the pale-colored regal/rococo theme because I've seen those for a million times already. HHA points? I don't care :^)

The type of room styles I have are a mash up between two to three furniture sets I really like together in a room. Mainly two sets blended together, this somehow started by indecisiveness for furniture sets; also didn't want to make multiple characters for it, so I just mushed/mixed/clumped everything. Each room had it's own theme and quirkiness it turned out pretty nice, I've kept my rooms this way since then :J

I think it's fine to copy from another, but not directly. It kind of gets your creativty going and potential for a new fabulous artwork.

I have different themes in each room....I do have full furniture sets that I use as I think they look good together, I just use my favourites. Then I add in Nintendo items and things I got from fishing tournaments. Plus other little bits and pieces that I like.
In my cabin room I have the cabin furniture, obviously, plus a fire, outside bath, scarecrow....even have a yoshi I egg in there....
Then I've done a space themed room that I can't complete yet as I still don't have a space wall and flooring.
My basement is going to be creepy/spooky stuff for now (once I find some spooky stuff). I might eventually change it to be a bit mix and match though seeing as I have the patchwork furniture to use and it's not a very big sett

My one town is a punk rock theme and has the most thought put into it's houses... The mayor lives in a room over a club with sloppy and cardboard stuff which is pretty common but the main room is like ticketing and mercy and there's a punk show room and a dj electronica club room and a seedy bar room and a tattoo parlor in the basement (I'm really proud of that room). There's also a "mall" with a sweets shop, a 711, a thrift store and a spa with a stock room in the basement, most of them are pretty normal but the common area came out really well like the middle of a mall with seats and carts and a claw machine and a you are here style map sign. I also have a suburban home for a "misunderstood" teenager to live and a boarding house/apartment house I imagine the guy who "lives" in the mall actually lives in, there's a common room and bathroom and a crappy common kitchen/utility room in the basement.

The rest of my towns I barely work on my houses lol.

I start with an overall color or color combination theme for a room before picking what furniture I want to use. Sometimes I'll go a little outside of the color theme if I think a piece would go well with what I already have in a room. The main room in my mayor's house has a pink, blue and white theme, so I used birdbaths, pink chaise lounges, stained glass, plum bonsais, lotus lamps and a moon to decorate with a mosaic wall and floor. I went a little outside the theme and put wall flower pots (which have some yellow on them) over all the doorways. Eventually, I want to have maxed out houses and unique rooms for all four of my characters c:

I haven't seen a lot of these ones:

- Space Station (Whole house, not just a room)
- Jungle/Forest
- Rainbow in main room and all same color in all the other rooms
- Punk House
- Nurseries or Kawaii Homes

- - - Post Merge - - -

Anyways, my Mayors house is gonna be very elegant/fancy. The houses main room has the Rococo Series refurbished to Gothic White with some other minor pink details, a fireplace, and a whirlpool bath. Then I want the upstairs to have a cute/pink bakery that makes it very cute like. Basement will be a peaceful Library or like a magical one (Im trying to go for the Fairy-Tale HHA points) so Im gonna base my other rooms off of that.

One of my favorite things to do is come up with really creative rooms. Some of my favorites are.......

Superman bedroom.
Rubber ducky bathroom.
Butterfly themed bedroom.
Pacman kitchen.
An entire house with rooms themed after special characters.
A bingo room.
Italian pizza parlor.
Rainbow Brite's house.
etc, etc, etc.

I know mine is probably mad life basic, but for my basement in my Dolce town, I want to make a statue room. The town is a Parisian-esque town so I want it to have a statue basement, a specific area of the Louvre gave me the idea when I visited it last year. I also would LOVE to do a toy shop theme of cute pastel garbage and a lovely garden. In the basement in my other town, I was thinking of doing a room that has a cacao forest with Spanish tunes playing in the back, due to in the main floor it's a rustic cafe.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery! I say as long as you make it your own and don't just carbon-copy someone else's setup, you're good. Case in point, I saw a girl on Tumblr who had this witchcrafty greenhouse/potion-making room...it was full of nature (plants, ore) and magical items and I just loved it, so I've started working on my own. It's very small right now, but it already looks so different from the room that inspired it...I wouldn't worry about people "copying" themes.

I just reset my town and I'm already accumulating more stuff than I have room for...my main room is my mermaid-theme room, then upstairs is my witch greenhouse, then I need a space/science lab, a kitchen (decorating kitchens is my FAVORITE), and a spooky/goth room, and maybe a sweets/candy room...so much to do!
