I use them as a visual walk-through for the games I get stuck on... they are 'basically' footage of a whole game played, chopped up into parts.[often have commentary on the game]

Yeah, that was my reasoning.
@ Jeremy- It's basically people playing through a game, with humorous/insightful commentary over it. Rather than just showing clips, people generally show themselves playing through the entire story.
