I HATE IT. Now I keep all the catchphrases of my villagers the same because of it. The first time it really started bugging me was when I changed Poppy's catchphrase to mushrooms (because of her foresty aesthetic) and then Antonio picked it up. The time it REALLY bugged me was when I changed Canberra's catchphrase to "I like girls" (because there is not ONE sisterly villager who is straight, fight me on this one) and then Yuka picked it up! They started hanging out a lot after that and it was really cute, until the day Dobie said it :/ it kind of defeated the whole purpose

I really don't like that it catches on between villagers. I had used "my dude" as a catchphrase for someone I've moved out, now Raymond says it all day. I hate that it replaces what you've set for them! They ask all the time if they can call me XYZ, I say no yet they still do. Why even have them ask at all, you know?

Lol in new Leaf pretty much all of my villagers said Cha-Chomp and wore Fang's initial shirt, what a trendsetter xD
At least it's not as bad as that in this game?

It's an annoyance of a feature. It's so hard to come up with something that generic enough that would suit every villager if it spreads to everyone but isn't generic to the point of being dull. Maybe I should just stop caring that the catchphrases spread. XD

I've also had multiple villagers ask me if I wanted to change their catchphrase over the past 2 days. Stop asking me please, I'm out of ideas. T_T

Yeah, I agree. While I don't mind it too much I'd rather not have it.

its really annoying, id love to be able to give my residents their own funny unique things to say, but considering how fast they spread them around it isn't worth my time

I also hate it ): I’ve opted to not give anyone a custom catchphrase for this reason

That's the only reason I don't change the catchphrases. Why can't it be personal like a greeting? :C

Haha it's strange but somehow also funny sometimes. Raymond got the phrase "meow" and it's funny to see a villager like Erik or Wolfgang say meow too :') It doesn't make sense but after a while they just change it or ask you to come up with a new one. It's not the end of the world :)

It's strange but I never had a villager that I set a catchphrase for change it to something else. It funny sometimes. Maybe it's cause I'm playing less or I don't remember.

Ugh I really wish that they didn’t spread. It’s the only reason that I’m probably not going to set a custom catchphrase. What’s the point of it spreading?

i didn't mind it as much in new leaf but now i find it kinda annoying if not cute or funny, like... okay for example,

> i told diana to say "too cute", marshal quickly picked up on it. i love him a lot but it sounds cringe coming from him
> diana wanted to change her catch phrase again, this time i told her to say "doe". tybalt started saying it too, which again i find weird coming from him... he's a tiger dfgdk
> marshal finally got sick of too cute so i told him to start saying "sulky" again, it didn't take long for pashmina to start saying it too smh
> judy also picked up "sulky" at some point
> both chief and bonbon picked up "toadally" from lily/each other

guys pls

Marshal only arrived on my island today, but he has already succeeded in pissing me off after being here for only 3 hours.
"Oh, Chloe, why are you trying to pull off a sweetheart dress in the heat of summer?"
I think I look pretty good, Marshal. Thanks. He was trying to sound concerned, but I actually really liked my outfit. You're on thin ice, Mr. Marshal...
(I also saw someone say he looks a lot like Draco Malfoy and now I can't unsee it. Idk if Alice looking like Kaitlin Bennett is worse than Marshal looking like Draco Malfoy)

I know I personally dislike because I feel like individualism of the villagers is lost. Same thing with the nickname issue.

i also don't like how fast it spreads as well. personally, if i like the default catchphrase of a villager and doesn't wish to change it entirely, i just alternate it like i gave diana "no doe" from her normal "no doy" when she wanted to change.

another example is dom's "indeedaroo," it's now "indeedarooo" just for the sake of keeping it but doesn't let them take the other villagers' catchphrase i personally gave them :)

i don’t like it, i give them personal catchphrases, i don’t want sherb to walk around saying ribbit like diva does... nicknames spreading makes much more sense and is low key cute but this is just annoying

I think that it's cute that they can share catchphrases around, especially when I catch the dialog the 2 villagers have. However, it does ruin catchphrases that I only intended for 1 villager to have.

i stuck it out with personalised catchphrases for a little while (and it was just japanese versions of english words ngl) and they didn't spread too much but now i'm just alternating between having everyone say "beeb" and "picklehead" (long stories) because they're goofy/neutral enough to fit everyone.

I HATE IT TOO
I just do boring ones because the personalised ones won't make sense after it inevitably spreads
