He may not appear at all if your pockets are full, oooor since you're trading him the clam you just found for a recipe, it still may work.

Maybe Pascal didn't give you a recipe, and instead gave you a pearl? I had the same issue with not seeing the recipe in my pocket and panicking that I sold it by accident, but really, he didn't give me a recipe. Just a pearl
