old thread

no he was very aggressive and immediately cussed me out and was sending middle finger emojis lol -- he was acting quite juvenile and i was genuinely trying to figure out what had happened.
well! I'd personally just exit that situation myself then. If he wasn't even willing to work with you or give you a chance with a polite "excuse me, but I think a mistake was made. I got back to my island and didn't have the tickets, is there anything we can do?" Then it wouldn't be worth it to me. Rudeness doesn't gain any favors >.<

so yesterday i posted on discord that i was looking to by 50 nuggets for 35 nmt. someone replied and said this was fine, and that we would meet at my island. i opened my gates for him and he came in, telling me to drop my nmt at the same time as he his nuggets. of course i was cautious and stood ontop of them to inhibit him from grabbing them preemptively. he dropped the nuggets and exchanged the tickets. HE PICKED THEM UP!!! then, i press - to end the session. he then proceeds to message me cursing me out because "he knew i was an f-ing scammer" and this and that and sending me middle finger emojis? i scroll one message up and he had been asking to shop at my nooks, which by ending session i inhibited him from doing, because i had someone from discord try to shake my bell trees the other day. ANYWAY im super panicking at this point because a.i dont want to get banned from the server and b.im a person of integrity and CLEARLY according to my wifi rating and long history of smooth trading, i am not a scammer. i proceed to tell him that he clearly picked up the tickets, they are not on MY island, so they are in HIS pocket. he says no and that "i closed him out of my island". i tell him that he picked up, i picked up, and saved / ended the game -- the way most trades work. he states " i picked them up and you saved the game. thats the only way i couldve been kicked off your island like that. theres no other way for it to happen. i was ripped off 400 tickets the same way the other day." and im like ummm okay except you picked up the tickets and i ended??? so then i proceed to tell him i can repay and he starts jumping the gun and saying yes thats ideal and this and that. he wanted me to drop another 35 tickets ??? why are people like this ?? i really dont get it at all, it was a pretty fair trade i believe? i wouldve totally adjusted to him.

Hey forgive me if I'm off-base here but I'm going to guess you're female? Unfortunately too often, and especially in real life, people in general but guys especially to girls will react with disproportionate anger to something you do or say. Your thought process then is, "whoa, I must've done something bad cuz I wouldn't react like that unless someone did something really bad!" Their rage makes you panic and makes you feel guilty even when you did nothing wrong. It's a manipulation tactic. What you really should be thinking instead is "whoa, would I react like that to them doing what I did? No I wouldn't, so they're way off-base". Why is it often guys using it against girls? Because girls are socialized to make nice and appease and keep the peace (and it's hard for a lot of girls to say no or be assertive) so they make easier marks for an unscrupulous scammer, and also irl they have things guys want that unscrupulous ones figure they can get through pressure.

You should report his behavior with screenshots to Discord mods.

This seems to be just a common miscommunication, while you agreed to trade items, you also failed in the fact of not noticing a request to use your nook store, but it was also his fault for assuming you saw it.

Though cursing someone out and sending middle finger emojis is less then ideal...why is it so hard for people to talk normally, they always jump to the worst possible conclusions...

It seem like a situation full of misunderstandings. I can see how both parties would think the other one is trying to scam. Personally, I have from time to time asked to visit a shop, but I ask even before I go to their island, I always tell them I'll ask before buying a limited item (I'm usually more interested in either selling my native fruit or looking at their umbrellas lol). I've recently been asking people if they want me to leave through the airport or with the minus... because I like leaving on my own terms. There was this one time I was leaving through the airport, I set my console down to reply to a message and when I picked it back up I saw that "my airport doors" were open I though this was weird and walked out... turns out I hadn't initiated conversation with the dodo and didn't leave their island, they kicked me out and I apologized, I wasn't mad about it, I just hope they understood it wasn't intentional. So this guy just chewing you out seems kinda ill tempered in my opinion .-.

If you gave him more tickets, I'm afraid to say you weren't 'almost' scammed. You were.

I have had the occasion of having a visitor leave my island with something I gave them. However, what they leave me is not in my inventory and I’m the one with the rollback. This has happened twice.

Having a perfect rating doesn't mean anything.. just as having a negative one doesn't mean you're dishonest or a bad trader, just a victim of a nasty person.

I feel for you though.

Don't go giving him anything more to shut him up. It was a fair trade, end of story. I'd contact a mod first before he does.

It happens. Thankfully, you usually don't run into those kind of traders on TBT; they rack up negative ratings fast enough to not have that much of an impact on the community. With other sites though, it's a bit of a gamble. Some trading sites are just too overwhelmed to deal with the number of scams that happen each day.

In terms of protecting yourself, being assertive is probably your best defense. If you show that you aren't going to cave into their demands, scammers usually shut up pretty fast.

Ughh I hate people, not everyone but ughhh. :’)

Would recommend to record what happened on the island next time. So you can have that as proof.

This happened like back in May. I thought it was recent. Still sucks though.

I'll say that it's likely a miscommunication or an attempt at a scam. However I will also say there are reports floating around that ending a session, either as a host or visitor using the "-" button can occasionally cause a glitch or corrupt saves. So there's also a chance they lost the tickets. Mind you that's still not your problem if that's the case. Just pointing out the possibility.
