Okay so I haven't played new leaf in over a year and I know all about going back to the last day you played to have everything intact without my villagers leaving and I mean I've done this a lot in the past so I know how it works.

But now here's the thing... (since I've read about it a lot in here but don't remember well) the last time I played was on April 12th of last year, if I change the date on my ds to today's date after I save and everything seems clear would it be consider the "next day"? Does that make sense lol?

Nope. Firstable, it's better to change the date via Isabelle as it won't affect other games.
If you decide to change via your ds system clock, then when you'll change the date again to todays date then the date in game will change as well and the amount of time that passed will be counted in game.
Start your game, when talking to Isabelle change the time to when you last played, check if someone is moving. If not - TT day by day until someone is. After you agreed/declined the move save&quit. Opne the game again and while talking to Isabelle change the time to today.

No it wouldn't be the next day if you are jumping ahead a lot. You would be jumping 17 months ahead. I use the in game clock when I do a big jump.

Make sure you stop a mover first and than talk to all your villagers. Than you can jump ahead. Repeat and make sure you talk to all of the villagers.
One time I did a two week jump and I missed 3 villagers. The next day I had another mover.

Thank you both! I did something slightly different but everything worked 😭😭😭
