The reason I dislike rock music is its complete lack of complex harmony. A lot of rock music I've listened to is either focused on lyrics or melody. I like a good melody, but I get tired of listening to the same 3 chords over and over again.

So humor me, guys. What are some rock musicians that have decent harmonies? I like some of Muse's songs, like "Falling Away With You", "Endlessly", "Butterflies and Hurricanes", "Unintended", etc... their more hardcore rock stuff is meh in my eyes, and I'm pretty tired of listening to the same 5 songs. Oh yeah, I also like Rise Against's "Swing Life Away"... great song.

So yeah -- recommend any harmonically/melodically complex rock artists?

I pretty much agree with you. I'm really not a fan of rock. Then again, though, I have a very limited taste in music.

Oh, and I really, really don't like Muse.

Huh, I thought I was one of the few... I mean, what is the musical interest in rock music? The melodies, though catchy, are usually carbon copies of older tunes... and the chords... haha. Seriously, these guys only know major, minor, and diminished.

I can't say I'm a fan, either. Like I said, I just like a few songs.

Heh. You're listening to the same stuff you listened to when I showed it to you years ago. : )

Ok... Umm... Try the songs "Sail to the Moon", "How to Disappear Completely", "Motion Picture Soundtrack", "Pyramid Song", "Video Tape", "Last Flowers", and "Blow Out" by Radiohead, you might like those... they're soft..ish.

The entire album of 'The Bends' is the definition of what rock is supposed to sound like, or at least did in the 90's.

I've got more... But I'll spare you most of it for now. : )

If you're listening to mainstream rock, you're getting pig food.

I just want to check out what people are listening to, and pinpoint why they like it. Don't worry, I'm not suddenly going to start listening to rock more than I listen to the stuff I like, hahaha.

I'm stuck in the past, like fish put it "pig food" is not what I like.

Um.

Wolfmother is my favorite rock band. They have songs used by Spiderman 3 and NFS: Carbon. I like most of their songs, but Joker and the Thief, Pleased to Meet You, Dimension, and Woman stand out for me.

EDIT: I said favorite. In fact, they're the only modern rock band I like.

Double EDIT: They're Australian. +10 Awesome.

Wolfmother's on Madden, too.

Rock doesn't have to be complex, and music is not all about musical harmony, just look at Nirvana.

Also, Wolfmother got all of their sounds from the 60's and 70's... good band, but they need to bring something new in their next album. Woman is a great song, but musically it is the weakest.

Of course it isn't. But I can't listen to anything that's not complex... I've played jazz and bossa-nova for years now, and going back to the "major-minor-diminished" system leaves me cold. I can't listen to primitive music for more than a minute... but I KNOW there are great rock artists out there, I just haven't found them.

Wasn't jazz-rock really popular at one point...?

There are fusions of every possible combination of genres, I'm sure.

Guitar is not the only part of a rock song, though.

Ever listen to AC/DC, by chance?

there's no way Bul would like it, but I lurve Flatfoot 56. Irish Punk Rock. Bagpipes and mandolins are present.

Mae is pretty good. "We're so far away" is pretty light, nice lyrics though... "Suspension" is one of my favorites.

Uhhhh... Sadly I love Linkin Park. Don't ask why, because I don't even know. Save me.

But yeah, listen to a few Mae songs... you might like them.

Yeah, they really need to innovate a bit. That's one of their big pluses for me, though, that they have that sound, even if it does seem a bit ripped-off.

Dude, the mandolin is present in like almost every modern flamenco song

;)

I'll give 'em a try.
