VETERANS DAY 2010

Memorial-Day.gif

November 11th is a holiday that all Americans should know about. And that day is called Veterans Day. U.S.A. deaths are combined with Canada deaths. That is the information I found on a website.

In WWI a total of 8.5 million people were killed, 21 million were wounded, and 7 million were POWS. We only have one WWI veteran still living as of today and his name is Frank Buckles. He is 109 years of age. (Please do note, these were all forces and nations.)

In WWII a total of 18,743,000 people died. 500,000 U.S. Military Men died. We have about 2 million veterans still alive as of today.

The Vietnam War we had 58,159 die, 1,719 missing, 303,635 wounded. North Vietnam had the most deaths.

Korean War: 36,516 dead (including 2,830 non-combat deaths) , 92,134 wounded , 8,176 MIA
7,245 POW

Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers

The Tomb Of The Unknown Soldiers is in Arlington National Cemetery. This is located in Virginia. What this man is doing is honoring the people who died in the 1700's - 1975. This is event is about 30 minutes long. If you ever have been to the cemetery you would see how strict the process is. He screams as a drill sergeant. He tells the whole crowd to be completely silent and you must not make any distractions. The uniform he is wearing is a very special uniform that you have to be nominated to wear. While you are in this uniform you can not do anything that is violating the rules in that uniform. A big one is drinking alcohol. It is a privilege to be in that uniform.

If you were to see his shoes up close you would probably see your reflection. That is how much formal the man is. They always do it at 2 AM everyday. They will also do this in any weather.

Arlington National Cemetery

We have a lot of importance people who are buried in Arlington. The most important people are;
John F. Kennedy
William Howard Taft

John F. Kennedy's grave is very special. The reason why is because he has a flame that will never go out. It has been through one of the toughest storms and still made it. Also his brother Robert F. Kennedy is buried in the cemetery.

Any former member of the Armed Forces who has been awarded one of the following decorations:

* Medal of Honor
* Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, or Air Force Cross
* Distinguished Service Medal
* Silver Star
* Purple Heart

The reason why they do that is because they have so much limited space.

The ending
If you like to read more information about what I posted please look it up on the World Wide Web. I'm pretty sure you can find more information. You can also talk to your grandparents or anybody you know who has served the Military. It doesn't matter what they have done but they might have a story that you may find interesting. You can also even try going to retirement homes and maybe seeing some veterans or going to a Military base to see if they are honoring the veterans. A veteran can be anybody who has served any branch of the Military. It doesn't mean if you shoot a guy and kill somebody.

Please don't think Veterans Day is all about staying home for a day and not even caring about people who fight and fight just to make us a better country. If you are going to reply saying that nobody is a veteran I bet you that somebody is. Might be somebody important that you don't even know about!

Happy Veterans day!

Edit: Made some errors. Sorry!

Not just Americans.

On Rememberance Day, Canadians should remember the CEF that helped Britian in World War 1. The Battle of Vimmy Ridge was one of the first signs of Canada's independance. After that battle loyalists referred to themselves as actual Canadians.

Nick please note that November 11th is referred to as Remembrance Day in Canada.
Americans weren't the only soldiers in war.

Seriously. I would like to add a fact that people often forget: on D-Day, probably the most famous battle in modern history, it wasn't just Americans landing in Normandy. There were Canadian and British troops as well.

Wow, thats a big post : o . But anyways, Happy Veterans day. And happy Rememberance day to Canadians.

Remembrance day here in Britain. I attended the 2 minutes silence for those who lost their lives and those family's who suffered. Thanks for making this topic, that is very kind of you.

Happy veteran's day and rememberance day. My veteran left to go deer hunting for a week so I didn't get to say it to him this morning...

^This.

Also just because America joined near the ends of both world wars doesn't mean that soldiers from other countries weren't fighting before.

We had our two minute silence during food tech, but I have nothing against that because my granduncle died in WWII. One of the music teachers also played The Last Post while we raised the Union Jack, I also got my poppy.

Lets make this clear. The reason why I didn't post information about Canada is because I don't know any information. I understand you guys were in the war and you fought. If you like you can make your own Veterans day for Canada.

My parents are veterans :D
They're going around to restaraunts to get free food all weekend long. haha

.-.

I don't believe that there should be a seperate thread. They're all equal.
We should remember all soldiers today.

I said I don't know anything about Canada and Canada's soldiers. I also believe that every soldier is equal and that every soldier is honored. If you like I will right the Kills and Deaths of those wars I listed.
