This is a conflict I've felt since the game came out, but I've kinda put off making any decisions. I'll probably keep putting it off for a while tbh, but I wanted to make this thread.

I really like the villager photo mechanic. I want all of the photos. They're the only bit of flavor text you can get that is completely unique to each villager. So far, I have about 20. Long way to go.

I'm torn between having a town made up of my favorite villagers vs cycling them out so I can get to work on more photos. I could easily fill up 10 slots with villagers I love, but then I'd stop making photo progress. I could also easily have a rule that once I get a photo, you're gone, but then I lose favorites... Or I can keep doing the completely arbitrary thing I'm currently doing where I keep favorites until I'm up at 3am one night and decide I can let them go, only to regret it the next day....

How have you decided to handle this? Especially interested in hearing from people who are as interested in photos as I am!

Honestly, I'm just cycling through until I happen to land on my ten favourites. Right now, I'm trying to get Marina to leave, but if I manage to land on her again with her true house (mine has a starter house) or a couple other dreamies, my list will be set.

On my previous island, my compromise was to have 8 "permanent" residents (one of each personality type) and 2 cycling slots. The 2 cycling slots I'd keep a villager until I got their photo, and then I'd let them go. It worked pretty well, although in retrospect I feel like 2 slots wasn't enough, especially since the last added villager couldn't ask to leave.

On my new island, I love all 10 of my villagers so much that I'm not sure I can manage to let any of them go, so, oops.

I struggle with this too.
I love love love island hoping and having new villagers to get to know and love on my island.
I love collecting their photos, it is such a neat memento.

So I keep trying to go back to my loose plan of having 5 permanent villagers and gradually finding other favorites to fill the remaining spots but only ideally after getting to experience a lot of different villagers on my island.
However, in practice it is proving tougher. Flurry, Graham, and Ike are all meant to be not permanent but I currently can’t imagine letting them go.
Basically, for now I’m just trying to go with the flow and see where that takes me. Letting go of Fauna was actually quite sad and I still feel bad about it sometimes, but at the same time I don’t regret my decision.

I tend to be an over thinker/worrier, so for now I am trying to stay more relaxed about my villagers situation and just enjoy the game and not be in a rush to either settle on a permanent 10 villagers or cycle through villagers at any particular speed.

it’s so tough! As others are saying, I get too attached.

i got 10 permanent villagers atm though i'm missing Cranky and Snooty :( Wish i have more slots cause i got fav on Cranky and SNooty villagers too like Wolfgang, Tasha lol

I regret rushing to get my favorites and using the amiibo cards for three of them (not counting the times i kicked them out and reinvited them when their houses got messed up). All but two are permanent (or so I think); the last two spots I have, I’m using them to cycle through the villagers. I’ve been finding it very enjoyable meeting new villagers whether on a mystery island or on a friend’s. I

I’ve always been a fan of the photos and collecting them all. I’m unsure at what point I’ll stop cycling and if I want all the pictures. If I come across Marshall, Lolly, or Ankha, all of whom I am really interested in, even though I have their cards, it’ll be hard to say no, so I’m hoping to come across them anytime soon so I can continue cycling.

That's more or less where I'm at :( I've invited Julian, Tangy, Apollo, Bob, and I struggle to imagine letting any of them go... But aside from Bob, none of them are in my top 10 favorites.. the first three were always meant to move on. Bob was the first villager I met on the gamecube, so he might be permanent...and I have Julian and Tangy's photos, so it should be time to let them go... but it's so hard. And Walker moved in recently, and I'd never even heard of him before, but I'm falling in love...

And this is all without even considering what I'll do if my favorites ever move in....

That's also part of my problem. All my favorites just happen to be peppy or lazy. If I pick PURELY on preference, I'd have a lot of repeat dialogue lol

Part of what inspired this post is that I have amiibo cards for Erik, Lucky, and Static coming, who are three of my favorites, but I don't know whether to use them now or wait.

I guess its just easier for me cause I only have 5 favorites so far, so the other half of my villagers I can be convinced to let go, though for now won't cause none seem more appealing to me than them. Instead of getting all villagers photos I've just been getting alot of the same ones which is kind of nice, pretty much guarantees I can trade for anything I want in the game.

I would say the method that got mentioned here, with keeping a certain amount of plots reserved for your favorite villagers while using the rest to cycle out villagers, is probably the best solution where you can have both. Of course depending of how many plots you use for cycle out villagers, it speeds up the process, like let's say you have 5 plots for your favorites and 5 for the "photo villagers", you would get faster photos and being able to keep at least some villagers you like. And once you're done with the photo hunting, you only have to search for 5 more favorites instead of 10. While I'm not hunting for every villager's photo, I would do however something like this if I would do it.

I think depending on your play style it's best to figure out if you have favourites that you absolutely want to stay on your island so you can keep them in mind and invite them if you come across them but don't rush to get there...
I did so thinking I'd get like 6/8 permanent and cycle the others, but now that I have 5 I'm positive I want to keep, I'm a bit frustrated it's going to take me so long to meet more villagers... I wish I could cycle more easily, especially since I try and get their photos before letting them go AND I don't play everyday anymore (because work)

I'd still advise doing a mix of both, just definitely don't rush to get the permanent ones, you'll meet them eventually and until then you get to discover even more villagers!
